Memory development: memorization lessons
Activate PRO subscription to complete the course more effectively
Memory is a skill that is vital for every person. Without it, we would never be ourselves, would not be able to speak and would not be able to think at all. But memory is not only an indispensable skill, but also an important element of our education and intelligence. The development of memory, attention and thinking often represents related tasks. Many of our mental characteristics directly depend on how our memory is developed. For example, the process of mastering the skills of speed reading, public speaking and mental arithmetic is essential without memory. This self-instruction course presents online lessons aimed at developing memory and the ability to purposefully memorize material.
Among additional materials in this section of the site you can find educational games and exercises, download free books and textbooks, find suitable activities, schools, courses and trainings - everything that will help improve your technique of memorizing information.
What is memory and memorization
Memory- this is one of the mental functions and types of mental activity designed to preserve, accumulate and reproduce information (Wikipedia). Thus, memory is understood as a system consisting of several elements:
Memorization is the process of memory through which new information is perceived and this information is recorded in common system thinking and associative connections. The key function of memorization is the creation of semantic connections, as a result of the work of our thinking and intellect on the content of the memorized material. Memorization is a very important memory process, the development of which will be given key attention in this training. However, this process is not the only one.
Storage is a process of systemic accumulation of information in memory, including the processing and assimilation of this information. Without storing information in memory, human learning is impossible; in addition, such important abilities as thinking and speech directly depend on this process.
Playback is the process of representing and recognizing information stored in memory, also called memories. Reproduction can be involuntary or voluntary. Our course will pay special attention to voluntary (special, conscious) reproduction.
Forgetting is also a process of memory, or rather a problem of its development. The loss of the ability to reproduce learned information can be partial (reproduction incomplete or with distortion) or complete (impossibility of reproduction and recognition). You will learn more about solving the problem of forgetting in the fourth lesson of this training.
Features of human memory
We all have different abilities to remember. For some it is easier, for others it is more difficult. In addition, we remember different things in different ways. For example, one person may be good at remembering people's names and facial features, but have trouble remembering where they put something in the house. And the other, on the contrary, remembers perfectly where everything is, but does not remember the name of his neighbor. Some prefer to use auditory and musical memory, others - visual, and some remember tactile sensations better.
Memory is an ability that has individual characteristics for each person. But there are patterns of memory that are universal for all people. And it is these patterns of memory and methods of its development, as well as techniques and methods of memorization that will be discussed in this online training.
One of the first specialists who paid attention to the problems of human memory development was psychologist Karl Emil Seashore. He claimed that average person uses no more than 10% of its memory. One proof of this is hypermnesia. Hypermnesia is a human pathology associated with an increased ability to remember. People with this pathology can remember many things verbatim and in great detail. But the peculiarity is that memorization occurs regardless of a person’s desire.

Methods for developing memory and memorization
In the lessons of this section, you can find useful techniques, rules and techniques aimed at increasing the level of memory development and the ability of targeted memorization (remembering the information you need).
The method of teaching memorization methods used on this site is very simple. It consists in the systematic development of memorization skills in four main areas:
Lesson 1. Attention and impression. We remember better what interests us, what we are focused on. These memorization conditions can be trained and created specifically at the right moment. Read more about this in the first lesson.
Lesson 2. Associations. Associations help create a connection in your head between what you want to remember and what is already firmly established there. The correct use of associations, which is described in the second lesson, will help you remember more information in less time.
Lesson 3. Structuring. Structuring the material is the most important factor purposeful memorization. The ability to correctly divide information and create thematic blocks based on logic and associative thinking will be discussed in the third lesson.
Lesson 4. Repetition. Human memory is a dynamic process; over time, something is forgotten. In the fourth lesson, repetition techniques will be given to help you better remember information.
And also to develop the ability to remember information, it is useful to use mnemonics and special techniques and memory training exercises:
Lesson 5. Mnemonics. There are a number of features of remembering certain information. This is due to the fact that sometimes there are convenient associations, the use of which in certain cases gives a strong effect on memorization. Such methods and recommendations are called mnemonics. Read more about this in lesson five.
Lesson 6. Memory training. Despite the fact that understanding the laws of human memory can improve the retention of necessary information, without special exercises it is difficult to achieve high results. IN this lesson will tell you how you can effectively train short-term and long-term memory.
As a result of completing the lessons, provided you follow all the recommendations, as well as correctly completing tasks and exercises, you will master the special skill of purposefully memorizing a large amount of any information. And by completing the suggested exercises, you can significantly improve your memory capabilities.
Games and exercises
Also within this training you will find useful games and puzzles that will help you develop your memory. After all, as mentioned above, what is interesting to us is well remembered. And what can better awaken our interest, ignite passion in us, than games and competitions?
Among these games:
Useful materials
In addition, this section will provide other necessary information to improve your memorization techniques.
We wish you success in developing your memory!

Thinking games
Thinking games are becoming increasingly popular because everyday life We don’t train our brain very often, but we want to “stretch” it, and it’s most pleasant to do this in game form. In addition, if thinking is not developed, it gradually degrades. Famous phrase says: “As we think, so we live!” That is, if a person thinks slowly, then he makes decisions slowly, acts slowly, lives slowly. But the world around us is changing very quickly. Therefore, it is possible to achieve success in it only if you have time to rebuild or even go one step ahead.
Games that develop thinking will teach you how to perform actions in the mind, calculate the situation a few steps forward analyze, highlight the main thing, generalize and draw appropriate conclusions. With our online thinking games you will significantly improve your memory, imagination, ability to analyze and even your reaction speed.
Let's understand the terminology - what is “thinking”? From the point of view of physiology and psychology, the following definition is considered the most correct: “Thinking is highest level cognition and theoretical development of the surrounding world on the basis of knowledge, ideas and inferences.” That is, when you draw certain conclusions based on your knowledge, you think. Thinking is closely related to action and speech.
Thus, you train your thinking by performing actions in your mind, analyzing the situation and making new judgments even in the game. This is exactly the kind of training we offer adults in thinking games.

Preface
People do not realize their full potential.
Almost everyone (and certainly those who are interested in this book) want to significantly improve their results: to grow, succeed and influence the world. But b O Most of their God-given potential remains untapped.
When trying to grow and develop as a person, most people make two unfortunate mistakes. Firstly, they look outside for answers, not within themselves. They are sure that someone has already created a miracle remedy; they just need to find it - and everything in their life will change.
Of course, no one admits that they are looking for a magic cure. But deep down, most people really hope that one day it will appear.
Having finally come to terms with the fact that there is no such remedy, people make a second mistake: they overcomplicate the growth process. In their eagerness to take on a task and in an attempt to shoulder personal responsibility, all but a few sages overcomplicate the simple steps through which tremendous personal growth is achieved.
There are no miracle cures in this excellent book. It is simple without oversimplification. You will find in it basic skills and immutable truths that have been around for thousands of years, but are still missing from most people's lives. They are fun to learn, fun to learn, and amazingly easy to use.
I have known Roger Sipe for over twenty years, working and traveling with him. I see how he himself does what this book teaches. Roger proves through his very life that when you understand and apply the fundamental principles laid out here, you win.
And although there are no magic remedies, the results seem miraculously. Remember information three times better! Read two, three or even four times faster! Formulate goals in such a way as to make the path to them easier, and manage time so that there is enough for everything that is really important!
Does it really seem impossible from the outside?
This impression is deceptive. Only the basics are given here, which anyone who seriously approaches the study of this book will master. And this is just the beginning!
The principles and statements outlined here really work. They have proven effective for thousands of people just like you. You have to have the courage to believe that you, too, can create something extraordinary, that you have the ability to absorb this brilliantly simple information and the responsibility to apply it. Be free!
Introduction
How to break records
First in its adult life I heard a motivational speaker speak at the age of 19 in May 1989 in Nashville, at the end of a sales training run by Southwestern Company. The speaker's name was Mort Utley, and he made one of the most chilling statements I can remember.
"Most people don't get what they want out of life."
“What a shame,” I thought. Mort gets paid a lot of money to motivate people, and he goes on stage and says that most people don't get what they want out of life. My 19-year-old brain said, “Thanks for the advice, Mort. And now you will probably say that in France they speak French. Most people don't get what they want from life - really? Why do you think I even listen to you?”
I didn’t want to be in such a majority, and you probably didn’t either. If you wanted to be an average person - with financial problems, ailments and lack of time that prevent you from enjoying life - you would not read this book. However, you need to understand that there are many unconscious patterns of thinking and behavior in your brain that are getting in your way. Here is one of them.
You have a strong desire to be mediocre.
Starting from junior classes, due to the learning system and the inherent desire for security in our brain, we have a strong unconscious desire to be like everyone else. We want to blend in with the crowd, to become mediocre.
Why am I starting with this? Mainly because if you're serious about living the life you really want, you first need to understand that even in the most prosperous and technologically advanced society in human history being mediocre sucks!
But like I said, you don't want to be average. Congratulations! By reading this book, you are already showing that mediocrity is not for you. You want to break records! In my book, you will learn the basic principles that have proven their effectiveness over many centuries in helping people and companies achieve continuous growth in all areas: professional, financial, physical, emotional, spiritual, as well as in all types of relationships. The wonderful thing about success is that it is easy to achieve. Not easy, but simple. Learn the basics, apply them diligently, and you will definitely achieve what you want.
Now re-read it and imagine that what you want has already come true. Imagine earning the required amount, getting a promotion, getting rid of an extra 9 kg, or meeting your ideal.
How are you feeling? Great, right? I think this is a good start. The book will explain to you how to take the seed of an idea and germinate it so that it brings not just a fleeting feeling of joy, but fruits in the form real result, and effectively, joyfully and enthusiastically.
Let's start with three features of thinking that affect success. By understanding these ideas and applying them, you will automatically start moving towards your goals. The better you understand them, the faster and easier you will achieve your goals.
If you wanted to be an average person - with financial problems, ailments and lack of time that prevent you from enjoying life - you would not read this book. Roger Sipe
“Memorize information three times better! Read two, three or even four times faster! Formulate goals in such a way as to make the path to them easier, and manage time so that there is enough for everything that is really important!” - such miracles are promised to the reader in the preface to Roger Sipe’s book “Brain Development”. At the same time, it is recommended to read it as training manual- with a pencil in hand, conscientiously performing all the exercises. How can you not buy it here? I bought it.
Roger Sipe
Personal effectiveness coach, co-founder of Freedom Personal Development. Considered one of the world's leading development experts creativity. He was a professional stand-up comedian for eight years. A skilled speaker, he conducts seminars and presentations in various cities and countries.
Expectation and reality
After reading the abstract for “Brain Development”, I thought: “Great! I love books that teach new things and help to understand how the main human organ works.” I thought I would learn a lot scientific facts, like from Kelly McGonigal’s book “,” or I learn about amazing mental traps, like on Lifehacker. But the book turned out to be a cocktail of the author’s fragmentary knowledge in the fields of psychology, physiology, time management, physics and esotericism.
If its first part (section “Fundamentals of your learning”) still correlates with the title and is really aimed at developing mental abilities, then the second, in my opinion, has nothing to do with brain development and is lengthy reflections in the style of the film “The Secret”.
Development of memory and speed reading - expectations met
The first six chapters of the book “Brain Development” correspond to the title: they help determine your personal readiness factor for learning, tell why the brain is comfortable in the comfort zone, and most importantly, they provide cool exercises for developing memory and speed reading.
Here's just one of them.
Mental folders
Imagine that your feet, legs, thighs, buttocks, stomach, ribs, collarbone, mouth, nose and forehead are folders into which you can “paste” any information. The “glue” in this case will be the most vivid and incredible visual images. An important point: you should always start with the same folder (from the foot to the forehead) and always proceed in the same order. For example, you need to remember the following shopping list: bread, milk, buckwheat, green tea, fruit. To “stick” each of these products into the right folder, you must draw the most ridiculous images possible. Imagine that there are two loaves of bread on your feet like shoes; instead of blood, milk oozes from an abrasion on the shin; and buckwheat grows on the thighs instead of hair. The more clearly you draw this in your head and the “crazier” the images are, the easier it will be for you to reproduce the shopping list in the store, looking at yourself from feet to forehead.
The first part of the book can really be read with a pencil in hand: the publication is designed in such a way that the exercises can be performed directly on its pages. Comfortable. And useful. I adopted many techniques for developing memory (like, for example, the exercise given above) and speed reading skills.
Components of Life Records - A Disappointing Reality
The second part of the book, alas, cannot be called as practical. It's called "Components of Records in Your Life." The first few chapters teach you how to set goals. At the same time, I personally, a person who reads (and writes) a lot of materials about productivity, did not learn anything new for myself. Yes, you need to set no more than 5–7 tasks, since the brain no longer perceives. Yes, you need to clearly formulate them and write them down on a piece of paper. Yes, you need to consciously approach the realization of your goals. All this is a long-known truth.
The next few chapters are about time management. In my opinion, they are the most useful of the entire section. Roger Sipe's "two-hour solution" may not be original either, but it is clearly demonstrated.
The final chapters are the author’s reflections on positive thinking, the power of thought, energy, etc., etc. I can’t say that some kind of stupidity was written - the judgments, although philosophical, are true. But, in my opinion, this is a topic for another book with a different title. (Whoever is interested in such topics, I recommend reading “” by Brandon Burchard.)
Resume
The fact that Roger Sipe moved away from the concept laid out at the beginning of the book (brain development) and slipped into a typical performance coaching speech left a bad taste. The miracles that were promised at the beginning did not happen.
My personal rating for this book is 5 out of 10. Five for the first part (it met my expectations) and –5 for the second (complete disappointment).
