New Urengoy Khmao or Yanao. The city of Novy Urengoy
Novy Urengoy is the unofficial gas capital of Russia, a place where beautiful white nights reign. In this regard, throughout the summer at night in this city it is light as day. This is due to the location of the city - in the north Western Siberia. Also, two small rivers pass through Novy Urengoy - Tamchara-Yakha and Sede-Yakha, which divide the city into the Northern and Southern regions. As it became known, its name comes from the Khanty and Nenets languages: the words "Ure" and "Ngo" symbolize "old woman" and "island on the site of the old riverbed". However, the inhabitants of the city simply call it "Beloved Nur".
Some experts translate the word "Urengoy" as "bald hill". Earlier, in the 1950s, Gulag prisoners called this territory a "dead place", because it was here that many years ago, prisoners on Stalin's orders built a railway.
It should be noted that today Novy Urengoy is a prosperous city in terms of economic indicators and industrial potential. About 550 billion cubic meters are produced here annually natural gas, where the main role belongs to the enterprises of Novy Urengoy.
Regarding the climate, it is worth noting that the winters here are quite long and cold. The lowest temperatures are recorded in January and February and are -21.7 and -20.1°C. Specialists noted cases when the temperature reached the level of -45 ° C.
Summer in Novy Urengoy is quite short - 35 days, the hottest month is July with temperatures around +25..+30°C. There is little precipitation, but there are strong winds.
The ecological situation in the city is quite enviable, despite the developed gas industry here. The main industrial enterprises are located outside the city, household waste is regularly removed, and any landfills in the city are punished with fines.
It is also worth noting that Novy Urengoy is also doing well in terms of population. According to statistics, as of 2012, 106 thousand people live here. However, for the conditions of the Far North, this is practically a record, given the fact that at the end of the 20th century the number of Urengoi people was not even ten thousand.
Another feature of the city is its multinationality. At the moment, more than 40 nationalities live here, most of which are Russians, Ukrainians, Tatars, Chechens and many others. The main religions are Islam and Christianity.
Territorially, Novy Urengoy is divided into 4 districts: northern and southern, which are called by the local population as “north” and “south”, as well as Limbyakha and Korotchaevo districts. The northern and southern regions are separated by tundra and two streams, but represent the city itself. In turn, Limbyakha and Korotchaevo are far from the center and were previously autonomous territorial objects. However, in 2004 they became part of Novy Urengoy. Thus, Novy Urengoy became one of the longest cities with a length of more than 80 km.
It should be noted that the city is quite developed transport connection: there are all types of means of transportation, while air transport remains the most popular. Also, the railway communication and the local river port, which is a transport artery between the northern cities, are no less developed here.
It is highly developed in Novy Urengoy and social infrastructure, which is represented by a large number educational institutions both for pupils and students.
A little about the city of Novy Urengoy
Novy Urengoy, one of the few cities Russian Federation, which surpasses in industrial terms and in population the administrative center of the subject of the federation, the city of Salekhard.
The city-forming industry is the extraction and transportation of natural gas. There are three city-forming enterprises in the city: Gazprom Dobycha Urengoy, Gazprom Dobycha Yamburg, Burgaz (Tyumenburgaz) and others: Northgaz, Gazprom transgaz Yugorsk, which are part of OAO Gazprom.
Novy Urengoy, only 30 years old, during this time was built Big city, with ever-expanding "import" quarters, for example: Turkish, and therefore it seems that it is much older.
Like in other cities, Urengoy has infrastructure, namely: a hospital (very large and good), urban transport (municipal, private minibuses and taxis), boiler houses in each microdistrict or part of the city (there are only 2 of them: southern and northern, separates their small river), etc.
There are a lot of schools, gymnasiums (the schools are simply magnificent, with swimming pools, with equipment for chemistry and biology classrooms), shops (from ordinary shops to representatives of the Eldorado, Expert, etc. networks), an airport, a railway station (a large good one is being built now railway station), cinema, markets (covered), etc.
Housing in Novy Urengoy
In new Urengoy, housing is divided into 3 types:
- capital housing
These are ordinary 5 - 9-storey houses, brick and panel. I won’t talk about buying a home, so as not to immediately scare away yours, while we talk about renting.
1 room apartments- from 18 to 22 thousand rubles / month. The rental price depends on the completeness of the apartment. Naturally, the better the equipment: washing and dishwasher, linen, dishes, etc., the higher the rent. But such prices are designed more for seconded employees. The enterprise pays for them, because it's only for a while.
2 room apartments- from 25 to 27 thousand rubles / month. Everything is the same as with one-room apartments, the better the equipment, the more expensive the rent.
3 room apartments- from 30 to 32 thousand rubles / month. Such apartments are needed, but not for everyone, especially if the equipment is at the European level. In this case, the rental price reaches 50 thousand rubles per month. Most likely, such housing is rented by the "Big Bosses" when they arrive with checks.
Utility bills are already included in the apartment rental price, except for: electricity, telephone, intercom, garbage.
Room in an apartment- from 10 to 14 thousand rubles / month. Those. you live with the hostess/owners and regularly pay for inexpensive housing.
- pieces of wood
These are old 2-storey houses, they do not look very good, but you can live. True, the audibility is high, but you live separately.
2 rooms- from 18 to 22 thousand rubles / month. A friend of mine lives in one of these apartments. He recently arrived at north to work, later moved his wife. Now they work together, she is in the hospital (masseur), he is in the municipal ATP. Conditions in the apartment are good, warm, comfortable, hot water, bath, etc.
- Dormitories
There are many hostels in Novy Urengoy, some of them family. The conditions are the same as in an ordinary hostel, I just want to add that the surroundings are clean, tidy, there is no "debauchery", as well as hot water. The only thing is the kitchen and the shower are shared, but for a young family it is quite an acceptable option. The price in the city varies a little, from 270 to 340 rubles per day.
Upon arrival, temporary registration is not difficult. If you have already found a job, then you can ask the HR department to help with registration, as they already know this process like “their 5 fingers”.
If you check into a hostel, the commandant will register you herself and everything will be in order.
Food
I will not post a price list here, I will simply say - almost all products are needed more expensive from 20% to 120%. For example, bread - from 25 rubles. (now I have 12 rubles).
Now back to the question: "is there any point in moving to live in Novy Urengoy." To this question I will answer: "YES".
To come to Novy Urengoy and immediately get a job in a good organization with a high level of salaries, 99 percent is impossible. As in any other city, we find out through acquaintances, friends, relatives that such and such a specialist is required in such and such an organization, and we go and try to get a job.
This is what happens here too, when you start working in Novy Urengoy in any organization, a circle of acquaintances will appear through whom you will be able to get a job in an organization with a higher salary and better conditions in your opinion.
Because New Urengoy industrial city, there is a demand for skilled workers and technical specialties. For example, if you are a turner or a gas welder, then in addition to your main job, you will definitely have private orders, the fulfillment of which will be an increase of + 30-50% to your basic salary.
Let's take the example that I described above - my friends. The wife got a job as a massage therapist in the city hospital, after working for 2 months, she began to receive patients at home for individual programs. Her husband had to buy some kind of specialized massage chair-bed that she needed in her work, but these costs will pay off quickly, because. three hourly sessions cost 1500 rubles. For the future, they plan to buy a small truck (like a Gazelle) and engage in private transportation, because. There, this service is in demand and brings good earnings.
Here is another example, a year and a half ago, we sent a specialist to work in the north. In the Krasnodar Territory, he worked as a computer science teacher high school a small village, a civil engineer by education, had experience in welding. They arranged him as a gas welder, in a small organization, with a salary of about 30 thousand rubles per month. After working for 1 year on the basis of an enterprise in Novy Urengoy, without complaints and with positive reviews, he was appointed Foreman with a good salary. But, even when he worked as a welder, he was satisfied with the salary, because. he was often approached with orders by private traders, which brought additional income.
Other examples could be given, but why? If your goal is to improve your own life, then you will make every effort to achieve prosperity. We all know that “All at once” will not work, and the stairs to your success are gradual steps.
As a result, I will quote the well-known expression: “If you want to live, know how to spin”, but the main thing is that there is a financial return, and in Novy Urengoy there are all opportunities for this.
Novy Urengoy is the largest settlement in the YaNAO. Surprisingly, in its size it surpassed even the capital of Salekhard district. On a satellite map of Novy Urengoy, you can see that the city is located on the banks of the Evoyakha River, and two more waterways - Tamchara-Yakha and Sede-Yakha, divide it into 2 parts. The city is located only 60 km from the border with the Arctic Circle, so in summer it is always light here at night.
Appearance locality associated with the development and production of natural gas. Within the territory of modern city, which can be seen in detail on the map of Novy Urengoy with diagrams, in the middle of the last century there was one of the Gulag camps. The barracks of an abandoned camp were occupied in 1966 by geologists and seismic surveyors to conduct research on the bowels of this territory. A gas field was found, and a city of gas workers began to be built on the site of the camp.
The construction of the city was greatly facilitated by the railway built long before by the prisoners of the Gulag, which is reflected on the map of Novy Urengoy by district. Actually, the first houses for natural gas producers began to appear next to the railway station.
Map of Novy Urengoy with streets
The city is divided into two parts - South and North, not only by rivers, but also by highways and railways, as well as taiga forest zones. More than 10 years ago, the city included the villages of Limbyakha and Kortchaevo, which are more than 70 km away from the main settlement. In fact, they are districts of the city, but remoteness does not allow residents of the villages to fully use the infrastructure of the "gas capital". To better understand the structure of the city, you can refer to the map of Novy Urengoy with streets.
The railway station is located on the border with the industrial zone. The Trans-Siberian railway connects the city with Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Moscow, Ufa and other large settlements of the country.
City passenger buses run inside the city. By public transport, you can get to remote villages, as well as come to the airport, which can be found on the map of Novy Urengoy with streets and houses in the southwestern part of the city. It is connected with the southern district by Magistralnaya Street.
Main streets of the city:
- 26th Congress of the CPSU;
- Trade;
- Named after V.Ya. Petukh;
- 70th anniversary of October;
- Mira;
- Friendship between nations;
- Prospect Gubkin;
- Leningrad Avenue.
The southern and northern parts of Novy Urengoy are connected by Gubkin Prospekt, which crosses the Sede-Yakha River along a road bridge.

- Hospitals and clinics;
- Pension Fund;
- FMS;
- Departments;
- Banks;
- Museum;
- Central square.
High-rise multi-entrance buildings have been built along the streets and avenues of both districts, which create neighborhoods with their own kindergartens and schools. A map of Novy Urengoy with house numbers will help you find any object, residential building or institution. There are very few wooden houses and low-rise buildings in the "capital of gas workers", and they disappear before our eyes in the process of demolition. The construction of modern residential complexes is actively underway here, which allow gas workers to live as comfortably as possible.
The infrastructure of the education system is developed in the city. On a detailed map of Novy Urengoy you can find:

Economy and industry of Novy Urengoy
It is not in vain that the population of the district calls Novy Urengoy the "gas capital". On the territory of the city there are offices of the largest mining companies. In addition, large energy companies such as Urengoyskaya GRES and Tyumenenergo are located here.

Story
In 1949, by order of Stalin, the construction of a transpolar tundra began in the polar tundra. railway Salekhard - Igarka. The road was built by tens of thousands of people, who, for the most part, were prisoners of the Gulag. At the former trading post Urengoy, the builders planned to stay for a long time. However, after the death of Stalin, the work was curtailed, the road to the beginning of the 60s turned out to be useless and was called "dead". The image of this branch, until recently, could be seen on the map of the railway tracks, located on one of the walls of the railway station in the city of Tyumen.
The 501st and 503rd construction sites were not mentioned anywhere for a long time, but the work of the builders still turned out to be not in vain, it helped seismic prospectors and drillers to discover the Urengoy fields, helped to equip them at a faster pace.
In January 1966, the seismic station V. Tsybenko, which was the discoverer of the Urengoy structure, occupied the barracks of the abandoned prison camp of the 503rd construction site.
On June 6, 1966, the team of foreman V. Polupanov drilled the first exploration well, and geological map country, a new unique natural gas field appeared - Urengoyskoye.
On September 22, 1973, on the site of the future city, a symbolic peg with a sign "Yagelnoe" was hammered - that was the name of the village at first, and on December 23, a convoy arrived to build the city. On June 19, 1975, drilling of the first production well was completed.
On August 18, 1975, the state registration of the village of Novy Urengoy took place. On September 25, 1975, the construction of the airport began, in October the first technical flight was made.
In 1976, the first children were born in Novy Urengoy - Sveta Popkova and Andrey Bazilev. On September 1, 1976, the first school opened, and 72 students sat at their desks.
In January 1978, the production association "Urengoygazdobycha" was formed. On April 22, 1978, the first complex gas treatment unit at Urengoy was commissioned, and commercial operation of the Urengoyskoye field began. On May 30, the first billion cubic meters of Urengoy gas was produced. On April 30, 1978, fighters of the All-Union Komsomol Shock Detachment named after the XVIII Congress of the Komsomol arrived in Novy Urengoy.
The settlement developed rapidly, gas production volumes grew, and on June 16, 1980, it was given the status of a city with the name Novy Urengoy, of district significance. Despite all these dates above, the day of the city is celebrated, as in most other cities, in the fall. More precisely - in September, on the first weekend, while 1975 is considered the year of the foundation of the city.
In 1983, the construction of the Urengoy - Pomary - Uzhgorod gas pipeline was completed, and since 1984 gas from Urengoy began to flow to Western Europe.
On November 5, 1984, the working settlement of Korotchaevo was transferred to the administrative subordination of the City Council, on May 10, 1988 - the working settlement of Limbyakha.
The municipal formation of the city of Novy Urengoy was formed in accordance with the Law of the Yamalo-Nenets autonomous region dated January 5, 1996 No. 34 "On the municipalities of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug".
According to the law of the YaNAO No. 107-ZAO dated December 16, 2004, the villages of Korotchaevo and Limbyakha ceased to exist as administrative-territorial units and became part of the city of Novy Urengoy, as a result of which the city turned out to be one of the longest in the world - more than 80 km.
In December 2012, the city authorities introduced a pass system to enter the city due to high level crime and the activities of terrorist organizations, effectively making Novy Urengoy closed city, as it was from the appearance of the city until 1991. The real reason was the restriction of both internal migration of the population and external (from countries former USSR). This measure was in effect for only (!) 5 months and was canceled mainly under numerous attacks from business. After that, a variant was invented with an OMON detachment based in Novy Urengoy. Under the influence of this measure, the criminogenic situation began to decline [significance not specified 126 days].
