Demensk city. Demyansk
After Valdai I went to Demyansk - small town(or rather, even an urban-type settlement) with a population of 5 thousand people, located in the southern part of the Valdai Upland, somewhere among the dense and dense forests. Indeed, quite remote places begin to the south of Valdai, which is exacerbated by the difficulty of their transport accessibility. I rode here on the bus St. Petersburg - Demyansk, which calls in Valdai and then returns to the turn to Demyansk from the highway (if you go from St. Petersburg, then this turn is earlier than Valdai - in Yazhelbitsy). By the end of my stay in Valdai, the rain stopped, but here the weather got a little worse, and it began to drizzle again. I spent only two hours in Demyansk, but this is enough for inspection.
2. Bus station. The frame shows the bus on which I arrived (and on which I later went to St. Petersburg in the evening).
Not far from Demyansk is the ancient Slavic settlement of Knyazhna Gora (which, however, I did not visit due to lack of time), archaeologists date the objects found there to the ninth century. And the settlement itself called Deman, according to the official version, was first mentioned in the Novgorod "List of cities far and near" in 1406, it was part of the Derevskaya Pyatina. But besides this mention, in Staraya Russa, birch bark letters of the 12th century with the mention of Demyansk were later discovered.
3. In the Russian Empire, Demyansk was a county town of the Novgorod province, and already in the Soviet years it was reduced to a rural status, from 1960 to the present day it has been an urban-type settlement. Accordingly, in Demyansk, although in small numbers, examples of district architecture have been preserved. This house currently houses the Demyansk district military registration and enlistment office.
5. Military memorial:
By the way, Demyansk is a place with a memorial military history. During the Great Patriotic War, German troops occupied Demyansk in August 1941. But in January 1942, the offensive of the Soviet North-Western Front began, during which parts of the Red Army surrounded the Germans, creating the so-called Demyansk cauldron: German troops (including the SS division "Dead Head") were blocked in Demyansk by a joint strike of the 11th and the 34th armies from the side of Lake Ilmen and, towards them, the 3rd and 4th shock armies from the side of Seliger (that is, from the south). However, in general, the plan of the Soviet command failed - firstly, it ended in failure landing operation Soviet troops in order to defeat the encircled German units, and secondly, and most importantly, in April 1942, as a result of fierce battles, the Germans still managed to break through the Demyansk cauldron and establish a corridor with the Seidlitz task force in Staraya Russa. As a result, for almost a year, German troops held the so-called "Demyansky ledge", but lost it in February 1943, when the Soviet troops completely knocked it out. Demyansk itself was liberated on February 23, 1943.
6. Central square. For Lenin, by the way, not the administration, but the school.
7. Here is a chapel in memory of Alexander II, built in 1884 and similar to the one in Velikiye Luki.
8. Wedding bench. Not without locks, of course.
9. Demyansk, despite its remoteness and small size, leaves a pleasant impression in terms of neatness and grooming.
10. I love such inscriptions in provincial towns:
11. The central transport artery of Demyansk is the highway P48 Yazhelbitsy - Demyansk - Staraya Russa. To the south in Demyansk the road branches off to Marevo and Kholm. Road signs are appropriate.
I would like to go further somehow. These deaf Valdai-Seliger regions attract me. This is a kind of symbolic center of Russia, it is on the Valdai Hills that the watersheds of the Baltic, Black and Caspian Seas converge, which means that rivers flowing in different directions begin from these regions. In fact, the Valdai Upland and Seliger serve as a natural border between the Northwest and the Center of Russia. However, the administrative border of the Novgorod and Tver regions runs along almost the same line.
12. Demyansk stands on the Yavan River - a tributary of the Pola (Lake Ilmen basin):
14. Monument to the gunners of the North-Western Front - 45-mm anti-tank gun 53-K model 1937, however, without wheels. Installed here, as the sign says, on the 45th anniversary of the Victory, that is, in 1990.
15. On the northern (that is, right-bank) side of Demyansk, buildings of the 19th century also come across. In the photo - the house of the merchant Smetanin, which now houses the museum of local lore.
16. Monument to the victims of political repressions:
17. Two-story Khrushchev. The landscape is quite pleasant.
18. A large number of different shops caught my eye in Demyansk. Some of which look quite original.
19. There is also a wooden old building:
21. Three-story houses are the highest in the town. There are not even five-story buildings here.
22. Direct trading rows:
23. After that, I again returned to the left bank:
25. Hydrocolumn. Where without her?
27. Some of these wooden houses may be already a hundred years old.
29. Pre-revolutionary building, which now houses the administration of the Demyansky district:
30. Unusual Khrushchev with glazed ends. I haven't seen these before.
31. Kindergarten:
32. Private sector:
And at half past four my bus left. Then there was a long road to St. Petersburg, where I was only at 11 pm. Demyansky, I completed my two-day trip to the Novgorod region.

Story
According to ancient legends, the modern village was formed on the site of Slavic settlements, spread along the banks of the Yavon and Pola rivers. For the first time they learned about it at the beginning of the 15th century. Those distant times he was part of the Derevskaya Pyatina (region) and was small in number. Over the centuries from the 14th to the 17th centuries, the settlement was attacked several times by the hordes of Sweden, Lithuania and Poland. During the wars, a small village was destroyed to the ground, but again revived and rebuilt by the surviving residents.
Until 1824, the village belonged to the Starorussky district in the Novgorod province. That year, by decree of Emperor Alexander I, Demyansk County was formed, and the village of Demyansk became a county town. The city received its coat of arms in late spring, in May 1855, which is a shield with the image of the Novgorod coat of arms in its upper part and an eared rye sheaf on a blue background in the lower one. The image of the coat of arms symbolized the conduct of arable farming and agriculture by local residents.
Throughout time urban settlement successfully grew and developed, and by 1899 had several industries, one of which was a sawmill. The transformation of the county pre-revolutionary city into a village took place in 1927 during the Soviet power. Demyansk received the status of an urban-type settlement 33 years later, in 1960.
Deep footprint in history patriotic war 1941-1945 left the "Demyansky cauldron", which was formed in these places after the encirclement of the German invaders Soviet troops during the military action of 1942 - 1943.
