Eragon - 1
SHADOW OF FEAR
The wind howled through the night, bringing scents that threatened great change. The tall shade, startled, pulled his nose. He looked almost human, except for his strange thick red hair and dark brown eyes with no pupils.
Shade felt a little unsure, although the information he received seemed to be accurate: they are somewhere here. What if this is a trap? After weighing all the pros and cons, he ordered in an icy tone:
- Move forward in a wide front, hiding behind trees and bushes. And so that even a mouse does not run past you! Don't let anyone pass... better die!
Around the shade, twelve lumbering Urgals, armed with short swords and round metal shields, shifted awkwardly from one foot to the other. Shields and sword blades were covered with some kind of black symbols. Urgals, like people, were bipedal, only their legs were short and terribly crooked, and their thick, powerful hands seemed to have been specially created in order to destroy everything around. Curved horns protruded from small animal ears. Hearing the shade's order, the Urgals hastily rushed into the undergrowth and, with a low grunt, hid and fell silent. Soon there was complete silence in the forest again.
Shade cautiously peeked out from behind the trunk of a huge tree, peering at the footprints on the trail. No human could see anything on the ground in such darkness, but for Shade, who had incredibly sharp eyesight, even the faintest moonlight was like the bright rays of the sun, and he clearly and clearly saw any little thing that could attract his attention. He held himself somehow unnaturally calm, but tightly clutched in his hand his long blade with a light blade, along which a notch as thin as a hair wound in a spiral. The blade was narrow enough to easily plunge into the enemy's chest between two adjacent ribs, but very strong and could easily pierce through even the most reliable armor.
The Urgals, unable to see in the dark as well as the shade, groped their way like beggarly blind men, stumbling over their own equipment. Breaking the silence of the night, an owl screamed piercingly. Urgals froze tensely, but the bird flew past. It was cold, and the horned monsters were shivering and obviously angry. A branch snapped under the heavy foot of one of the Urgals, and the shade hissed angrily at him. The others immediately stopped, emitting the "aroma" of rotten meat, and shade turned away in disgust: after all, urgals are just cogs in his game, nothing more.
However, the shade's impatience grew as the minutes of waiting began to turn into hours. He must have thought that the smell of the damned Urgals was already everywhere, the whole forest smelled of these horned freaks! Nothing, let them sit in ambush for the time being, he will not allow them to warm up or warm up. He wouldn't allow himself that luxury. And shade froze behind the tree again, closely following the path. The wind rustled again in the foliage, bringing a new portion of hateful smells. This time the smell was much stronger and unbearably irritated Shade. He even growled dully, lifting his thin upper lip and baring his fangs.
- Get ready! he whispered to the Urgals. He was trembling with excitement, nervously waving his blade in the air. Oh, how many magical spells were required, how many various efforts, so that this moment of retribution finally came! And this moment should never be missed!
The urgals' eyes flared brightly in their deep sockets, and they tightened their grip on their heavy swords. There was a loud thump ahead, like iron on stone, and dim lights floated out of the darkness and rushed down the path.
Three white horses with riders were galloping straight towards the ambush set by Shade. The riders rode with their heads held high and proud, their cloaks flowing in the moonlight like molten silver.
The first one was clearly an elf - sharp ears, graceful arched eyebrows, a slender, but very flexible and strong body, like a rapier.
Now there are a great many different books on the bookshelves, but even in our time it is difficult to find something of really high quality. And in the fantasy genre, it is especially difficult to find something that will touch the heart and make you read to the end without stopping. But even among all the modern literary diversity, one can find really kind and interesting stories which are suitable even for children.
Sensation by Christopher Paolini
Twelve years ago, the world saw the first novel, Eragon. It would seem that another second-rate fiction from another second-rate author. But no. Fate would have decreed otherwise.
Initially, Christopher conceived a trilogy, but the story of the rider Eragon turned out to be so inexhaustible that the decision was made to write a fourth book. However, even its ending leaves room for the imagination of fans of the saga.
The author's talent even allowed him to receive the Guinness World Records Award: in 2011, it was Christopher Paolini who was recognized as the youngest writer with a record number of book copies sold around the world. Eragon has sold over 25 million copies and outsold four of JK Rowling's Harry Potter novels.
The story of a little genius
Born in Southern California, his mother is a teacher and his father is a former literary agent. It is not surprising that an educated family left its mark on the personality of the future writer, because all his childhood was spent among books.
The author was trained by the parents themselves, teaching Christopher school curriculum at home. Already in childhood, little Paolini became interested in reading, often visited the library, where he spent a lot of his free time. Then he began to write. These were short stories, stories and even the first poems. But not everything was given to a talented American with such ease: for example, by his own admission, he was able to master mathematics. But he has mastered more than three thousand books and can easily quote a full cycle of books about
The beginning of the dragon saga
The young American Christopher Paolini was unusually smart and talented for his fifteen years: already at this age he wrote the first part of the tetralogy.
The story about the world of dragons, elves, dwarves and Varden was first published by the writer's parents and became quite popular among students of junior and high schools in the state.
Then the version of samizdat came to the attention of the writer Carl Hiasen. He spent his vacation in Montana, and after reading the novel "Eragon", he sent it to his publisher - Alfred Knopf. A well-known publisher could not even think that the author of the book is so young. He was fascinated by Christopher's literary talent. Thus, four years after the creation of Eragon, the book that was destined to become a bestseller was released throughout the West. It is also interesting that Adolf Knopf did not have to make practically any changes to the original version, since the style and style of the young Christopher Paolini was sufficiently formed.
The Magical History of the Horsemen's World
The novel "Eragon" is a fascinating story of the world of Alagaysia. The name and the name of the protagonist comes from an analogy to the original English version of the word "dragon": Eragon - Dragon.
Together with the boy Eragon, the reader learns about the people of his world, elves and gnomes. A young village boy finds a dragon's egg and becomes the last free Rider in an age of Galbatorix's brutal tyranny. Together with Saphira, his faithful fire-breathing friend, Eragon will have to confront the king's soldiers, fight the Razzacs, find the rebels - the Varden, establish contact with the elves of Elesmera and master magic in order to become a true representative of the ancient Order of the Riders.
Influence on the work of Christopher Paolini
The fantasy universe of young Paolini was not entirely original. Such legendary works as The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit had a great influence on the writer. He himself spoke about this, bowing to the classics of world fantasy - the books of JRR Tolkien. But these are not the only books that are reflected in such a work as the novel "Eragon". Many readers have noted Alagaesia's extraordinary resemblance to a map of Middle-earth, and the idea of the Order of the Riders is borrowed from the Jedi of the Star Wars saga. The use of magic by the protagonist is reminiscent of the cycle of tales about Earthsea, where the idea of the magical power of words was also reflected. Admirers of the tetralogy deny such statements, but the coincidences are obvious. But even so, it is impossible to deny that Christopher Paolini is a truly talented writer, and his ideas have resonated in the hearts of millions of readers around the world.
Life after Eragon
In 2006, the story of the boy and the dragon was filmed by Hollywood, releasing the film of the same name. But, unfortunately for all fans of the series, the film did not live up to expectations. In the film adaptation, gross factual errors were made in the story, which made it impossible to shoot the next parts of the saga.
Today, the best-selling author is a welcome guest on American TV shows and one of America's best-known writers. Fans are interested in a possible continuation of a seemingly complete story, new works and everything else that Christopher Paolini had a hand in.
Eragon, all books in order:
- the very first part of "Eragon";
- the second - "Return";
- the third - "Brisingr";
- the fourth - "Heritage".
Biography
Born in Southern California to a teacher and former literary agent. The family later moved to Paradise Valley, Montana.
Christopher was homeschooled by his parents. As a child, he often wrote short stories and poems, which caused him frequent visits to the library, and he read a great deal. He said that he knew nothing of mathematics, but he had read three thousand books and knew by heart the entire cycle "Ring of the Nibelungen". Likes to watch films from the family cinema library. At night he reads the works of the Irish poet Seamus Heaney ( Nobel Laureate 1995).
Literary activity
At the age of fifteen, he wrote the fantasy novel "Eragon" - about the boy Eragon and the dragon Sapphire, who, in alliance with the elves, dwarves and rebel people (Vardens), oppose the empire led by King Galbatorix. The novel was published at the expense of Christopher's parents and gained considerable popularity in the schools of Montana. He was noticed by the writer Carl Hiasen, who spent his holidays in this state. He sent the book to his publisher Alfred Knopf, who published it in 2003.
The book sold 250,000 copies in one week alone and spent 87 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and 21 months on Publisher's Weekly Young Adult Fiction bestseller list, with 9 months at number one. The novel has been published in a total of 37 countries in excess of two million copies.
Eragon was the first novel in the Legacy tetralogy. The series includes books "Eragon", Eldest, in Russian translation "Eragon. Return "and" Brisingr ". Eldest is no less popular than Eragon.
Critics believe that the young author was influenced by John Tolkien's famous Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as other famous fantasy books. Some reviewers find in "Eragon" allusions to "Star Wars" by George Lucas.
In December 2006, the premiere of the film "Eragon" (with the participation of John Malkovich and Jeremy Irons) took place - based on the first book of the tetralogy. It is also known that the fourth book will be released soon.
