There is a grace-filled power in consonance. Lermontov's poem prayer in a difficult moment of life
In a difficult moment of life
Does sadness linger in the heart,
One wonderful prayer
I repeat by heart.
There is a grace
In harmony with the words of the living,
And breathes incomprehensible,
Holy beauty in them.
From the soul as a burden rolls down,
Doubt is far away
And believe and cry
And it's so easy, so easy...
Analysis of the poem "In a difficult moment of life" by Lermontov
Lermontov entered the poetic world, first of all, as a lone rebel. From his earliest writings, he develops the romantic image of the poet opposing the crowd. Main aspirations lyrical hero- the achievement of freedom and independence. In parallel, he develops a demonic theme. Lermontov's ideal is a rebellious spirit, standing above human and divine laws. Naturally, such moods were very far from Christian humility and humility. Many considered the poet a freethinker and an atheist.
That is why the poem "In a difficult moment of life", or "Prayer", stands out sharply against the general background of Lermontov's work. It was written in 1839, shortly after the poet's return from exile. The appeal to the religious theme can be explained by the painful search for a way out of a difficult situation. Pushkin's defense in the poem "" caused royal disgrace and closed the doors to many houses of high society for Lermontov. He was treated with suspicion and distrust. While still a young man, the poet bitterly admits that he does not find a response in people's hearts to his calls for justice. His alienation from the world only intensifies.
It is unlikely that Lermontov experienced a sudden religious insight. It's just that faith has remained the only means to salvation when other possibilities have already been exhausted. There is evidence that the poet was strongly influenced by communication with M. Shcherbatova, who urged him to turn to God.
A calm and sad poem still does not fit into religious standards. It does not mention God, saints, or any biblical characters at all. The author does not resort to repentance, which, in theory, should have been done in the first place, given his life and actions. He humbles his pride, but does not admit his mistakes. Lermontov's prayer is simple and easy. Its specific content is completely irrelevant. The meaning is the very "consonance of the words of the living." Their combination has incredible power, allowing a person to throw off the heavy burden of accumulated experiences and suffering. Prayer is able to purify the soul and enable you to continue to carry your life's cross.
The poem is amazingly lyrical and musical. Subsequently, a romance was created on its basis.
The verse "In a difficult moment of life" became a vivid example of religious lyrics. In our time, it is very highly regarded among followers of unorthodox Christian teachings.

The poem is usually associated with the name of M. A. Shcherbatova, referring to the autobiography of A. O. Smirnova-Rosset, where she quotes “Prayer” and recalls: “Mashenka ordered to pray when he was longing. He promised her and wrote these lines.
The idea of \u200b\u200bthe “Prayer” may also have been inspired by the fact that in the fall of 1839 V.F. Odoevsky, who had warm friendly relations with Lermontov, handed over to him the book of Paisiy Velichkovsky. This is evidenced by Odoevsky's note to the poet, dated after August 5. 1839 In a note, Odoevsky asked the poet to read the Gospel. Regarding P. Velichkovsky's book, Odoevsky wrote: "About another 'edition' write what you feel when you read it." Soon, “Prayer” appeared in No. 11 of “Notes of the Fatherland” (censored permission November 14, 1839).

Analysis of Lermontov's poem "Prayer"
Two facts from the author's biography are connected with the appearance of "Prayer". In 1839, the poet received as a gift from Prince Odoevsky the Gospel and a collection of medieval spiritual texts translated from Greek. The donor suggested that the poet turn to Christian literature more often. Approximately the same words Lermontov heard from Maria Shcherbatova, a woman with a "childish faith" in God. The beautiful princess advised her admirer to pray to get rid of his dreary mood. The poem became a poetic response to the simple but wise recommendations of loved ones.
The state of excruciating sadness, stated in the first lines, is transmitted at the phonetic level: the assonance is based on the predominance of the vowel sound "y". The mental discomfort of the hero, bordering on physical ailment, is emphasized by the verb "pressed".
In the central part of the work, the motif of the power of the word, sanctified by faith, develops. The author accumulates vocabulary with religiously sublime positive semantics: “wonderful”, “blessed”, “holy charm”. Sincerity is the main quality of the healing word. The power of "living speeches" is incomprehensible to the human mind - this emphasizes the definition of "incomprehensible" - however, the heart is able to feel the highest harmony, to which time-tested verbal formulas are involved.
In the last two quatrains, the phonetic structure of the poem changes: the sounds conveying heart anguish and anxiety are replaced by assonance based on “and”, “a”. The soul of the hero is gradually freed from the heavy load, which is demonstrated by changes in the sound accents of the work.
The final quatrain describes the healing effect of sincere prayer. In order to depict the feelings of the lyrical subject, the poet turns to homogeneous impersonal constructions - a technique characteristic of Lermontov's poetics. Impersonal verbs and adverbs adjoining them form an antithesis with the lexeme "crowded", which appeared in the initial lines.
Contradiction has two important functions. With its help, the way to get rid of despondency looks clearer and more convincing, and the poetic text is also framed, closing the overall composition. Anaphora, which abounds in the last couplet, draw attention to the new state of the soul of the lyrical "I" - light, free, enlightened.
Analysis of Lermontov's poem "Prayer"
“Here they are talking about him, an atheist, and I will show you ... the poems that he brought me yesterday,” said his grandmother, E. A. Arsenyeva, about Lermontov’s poem “Prayer” (“In a difficult moment of life ...”). Of course, these words sounded with pride, because her grandson was indeed often accused of godlessness and a frivolous attitude to life. But outwardly frivolous, Lermontov was still inclined to reflect on the meaning of life and spiritual search. An analysis of Lermontov's poem "Prayer" will help to verify this.
History of creation
"Prayer" was created by Lermontov in 1839, already in the last period of his work. The reason for writing was a conversation with M. A. Shcherbatova, whom the poet was courting at that time. According to the memoirs of contemporaries, she advised him to pray when he had anguish in his heart, saying that nothing helps like a sincere prayer to God. Lermontov apparently followed her advice. It is difficult to say whether it was easy for a person who publicly declares his skepticism and unbelief, the creator of the beautiful "Demon" to turn to God from pure heart. However, the "Prayer" was soon born, which can be called an example of the most beautiful Christian lyrics. The poem immediately gained immense popularity, and is still considered one of the most famous in Lermontov's poetic heritage. And in 1855, his words were set to music by the composer M. Glinka, so the romance arose.
Theme and idea of the poem
The description of the verse “Prayer” may look like this: it depicts the clash of the lyrical hero with the harsh and difficult world. He is going through a difficult period of life and is in turmoil. The poem refers to philosophical lyrics, and already from the first lines it sets a range of problems:
"In a difficult moment of life
Is there sadness in the heart ...
The verb "crowded", used here by the poet, conveys a feeling of hopelessness, a narrow space from which it is not so easy to get out. And immediately, in the next two lines, the author offers his solution:
"One wonderful prayer
I repeat by heart"
As you can see, this decision becomes an appeal to God, the search for consolation and protection from him. It is not mentioned which particular prayer was chosen by the lyrical hero, and this is not so important - thanks to understatement, everyone can present their favorite lines here. Another thing is more important - the inexplicable charm of this prayer, and Lermontov describes it in the next quatrain.
And breathes incomprehensible,
Holy charm in them "
The repetition of familiar words calms, gives "fertile strength", which is what is said in the last four lines:
“From the soul like a burden rolls down,
And believe and cry
And so easy, easy…”
Thus, we are presented with a picture of spiritual quest and peace found in prayer. The soul is cleansed by tears of repentance and an outburst of sincere faith, this is where, according to the poet, salvation from doubts and troubles. Lermontov does not repent, does not list his sins and does not ask for intercession. No, he finds peace when he repeats the simplest prayer, and he shares this deep prayerful feeling with the reader.
We can say that in the poem "Prayer" Lermontov reaches his creative heights and reveals himself as a mature writer. Here one can see a turn towards spirituality and traditional values, and at the same time a departure from the already familiar ideas of loneliness, incomprehension and demonism. In the future, the poet more than once refers to the theme of religion and folk origins, which allows us to speak of this poem precisely as a key moment in creativity, and not as a one-time phenomenon.
Artistic media
In Lermontov's poem "Prayer" analysis artistic means is no less important for understanding its idea than consideration of the text itself. What methods does the author use?
First of all, we note that despite the small volume of the poem (three quatrains), it contains a large number of tropes. These are epithets: “a difficult moment of life”, “wonderful prayer”, “incomprehensible, holy charm”, “gracious power”, and metaphors: “an incomprehensible, holy charm breathes in them” and comparisons “from the soul like a burden will roll down”. All of them serve the same purpose: to convey the sublime, upbeat mood in which the lyrical hero is, to express the depth of his experiences and set the reader himself in an elevated mood. Let us pay attention to the fact that many words belong to a high layer of vocabulary (“burden”, “graceful”), which indicates the religious and philosophical orientation of the work. Lermontov also uses specific poetic phonetics, using assonances. The vowel “y” is repeated in the poem (13 repetitions in the first quatrain): “In a difficult moment of life”, “One wonderful prayer”, which creates a special, slow sound, reminiscent of unhurried, drawn-out reading in churches. It also conveys the melodiousness of the speech of the prayer itself, as if pouring anew from the lips of the hero. In subsequent quatrains, the emphasis shifts to other vowels, "a" and "e", which symbolizes a certain rise, upward direction. For this, various stylistic figures, somehow repetitions: “so easy, easy”, syntactic parallelism: “I believe and cry, / And it’s so easy ...”.
The poem is written in iambic four-foot and three-foot iambic, the rhyme is cross, precise, alternately masculine and feminine.
The meaning of the poem in the work of Lermontov
So, the analysis of the poem "Prayer" shows her artistic originality and emphasizes the universality of the lyrical hero for all readers: it is not for nothing that the romance to the words of Lermontov enjoyed the same success both in high-society salons and among the common people. The importance of this work for Lermontov's work as a whole is undeniable. For many years it remains the pinnacle of Russian Orthodox lyrics, and only in the 20th century. A. Blok and S. Yesenin manage to reach the same heights in depicting religious feelings.

Lermontov's poem prayer in a difficult moment of life
Moscow, " Fiction”, 1981.
- » Martynova (When you have to argue.)
When you have to argue, Never argue about the fact that it is impossible to be wise to the one who admits it;.
The blizzard is noisy, and the snow is falling, But through the sound of the wind a distant ringing, Sometimes breaking through, is buzzing; It's the echo of a funeral.
The collection of evil is his element. Rushing between smoky clouds, He loves fatal storms, And the foam of rivers, and the noise of oak trees.
Do not blame me, omnipotent, And do not punish me, I pray, For the fact that the darkness of the earth is grave With its passions I love;.
I, the mother of God, now with a prayer Before your image, a bright radiance, Not about salvation, not before the battle, Not with gratitude or repentance.
Believe me, nothingness is good in this world. Why deep knowledge, thirst for glory, Talent and ardent love of freedom, When we cannot use them.
Analysis of the poem Lermontov's Prayer (In a difficult moment of life ...)
Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov in his work "Prayer" accurately described the feelings inherent in many believers. This poem opened up new facets of the poet's personality. He believes in God and hopes for deliverance from the hardships of fate and doubts. The poet seems to confess to the reader and reveals to him the secret of an easy life. He takes the reader along the path from despair to the purification of the soul.
In the first stanza, Lermontov represents the gloomy mood of the lyrical hero, from which prayer is intended to save. Which of the many prayers brings him peace remains a mystery.
Regardless of this, every prayer contains living words. They are filled with spiritual meaning and bestow grace, which means hope for the salvation of the soul. In the second stanza, Lermontov personifies faceless words, they are “alive” and “breathe”. Moreover, he cannot explain the nature of God's grace hidden in prayer.
The third stanza describes the effect of prayer. Faith replaces doubt and brings tears of relief. The only action that the lyrical hero performs is repeating the words of the prayer. Everything else happens to him regardless of his will. It is not said how the hero deserved redemption, which means that it was granted by God.
Analysis of the Poem "In a difficult moment of life ..." (Prayer)
The poem “Prayer” (“In a difficult moment of life ...”) was written by M.Yu. Lermontov in 1839. With the same name, the poet had two previous poems - 1829 and 1837. "Prayer" of 1839 is dedicated to M.A. Shcherbatova. She advised the poet to pray in moments of anguish, doubt, and Lermontov promised her.
The genre of "Prayers" is a lyrical monologue, the style is romantic, we can attribute it to philosophical lyrics.
Compositionally, the work is divided into three parts (according to the number of stanzas). In the first part, the lyrical hero denotes his state of mind. In his life there are often moments of longing, sadness, confusion. At such moments he turns to God:
One wonderful prayer I repeat by heart.
It is characteristic that the state of the lyrical hero here is indicated by a verb in a personal form: “I say”. Thus, the poet emphasizes the personal perception of life, while he designates the sphere of "human". The second part is a story about the prayer itself. We do not hear her words here, but we feel the “power of grace” contained in them. The third part tells about the liberation of the soul from anguish and painful doubts. Divine grace descends on the soul of the lyrical hero, she saves her, returning from darkness to light:
As a burden rolls down from the soul - Doubt is far away - And it is believed, and weeps,
And it's so easy, so easy...
And here the state of the lyrical hero is already expressed with the help of impersonal verbs: “believe”, “cries”. The soul of the hero, freed from everything vain, human, entered the sphere of the Divine. Thus, the first and third parts are compositionally contrasted in this work 74 .
The poem is written in iambic trimeter, quatrains, rhyming - cross. The poet uses various means artistic expressiveness: epithets (“wonderful prayer”, “gracious power”), metaphor and comparison (“And an incomprehensible holy charm breathes in them”, “Doubt will roll down from the soul like a burden”), inversion (“In a difficult moment of life”), anaphora ("And believe, and cry, And so easy, easy").
We can consider the work in the context of the poet's philosophical reflections on God, nature - the poems "Prayer" of 1829 and 1837, the poems "When the yellowing field is agitated ...", "The branch of Palestine", "To the child". Reading these works, we are amazed at “how much faith, how much love of the soul is in our poet, branded by an unbelieving denier!”. Under the influence of Lermontov's poetry, I. Bunin wrote the poem "For all of you, Lord, Thank you!":
Thank you for everything, Lord!
You, after a day of anxiety and sadness,
Give me the evening dawn
The expanse of fields and the meekness of the blue distance.
I am alone now - as always.
Thus, the work of M.Yu. Lermontov was created in line with the Russian literary tradition.
In the late period of his work, Mikhail Lermontov wrote the poem "Prayer". Despite the fact that the author is only 25 years old, he has already been in exile and rethought his own life. In it, most often he had to play the role of a brawler and a secular lion.
Analysis: "Prayer" Lermontov. The history of the creation of the poem
After returning from the Caucasus, the poet realizes that it is impossible to change the world that surrounds him. He is unable to do so. The feeling of impotence makes Lermontov turn to God. Because of his classical religious upbringing, the poet never took faith seriously. His contemporaries often noted in their notes that the active and stormy nature of Lermontov very often forced him to first do things, and then only think about what he had done. Being a rebel in life, the poet never tried to hide his political convictions. Only after a few months spent in the Caucasus, he was imbued with the ideas of a higher principle, to which the fate of man is subject.
Analysis: "Prayer" Lermontov. Trying to rethink life
In his heart, Lermontov still remains a rebel. But he begins to realize that his mission is not only to prove to others their stupidity and worthlessness. After the Caucasus, he returns to Moscow, where he attends social events and closely converges with Maria Shcherbakova. In one of the conversations, a young girl declares to the poet that only a prayer addressed to God helps to find peace of mind and find strength in the most difficult moments of life. It cannot be argued that this conversation made Lermontov take a fresh look at the world. But, apparently, the poet found his own, special truth in the words of the young lady. He writes his "Prayer" - the brightest and most lyrical work.
Analysis: "Prayer" Lermontov. Main theme and idea
The poem does not contain requests, repentance and self-flagellation. The poet admits that simple words can have power, cleanse the soul from longing, sorrow and a heavy burden caused by the fact that a person is aware of his impotence. An analysis of Lermontov's poem "Prayer" shows that the poet took the words of the young Maria Shcherbakova seriously. He begins to pray at those moments when he finds himself driven into a corner by his own thoughts and experiences. Doubt is another insidious enemy of the poet. It's like a punishment for him. Are his desires and aspirations correct? What if the passion for literature is just a self-deception, and the ideals that identify the mutual respect of people and equality are fiction, the fruit of a rich imagination? To get rid of such thoughts, to dispel doubts and anxiety, Lermontov is trying to find spiritual support.
"Prayer": analysis and conclusions
Creating a work, the poet tried to come to terms with the path destined for him. At the same time, he strengthened faith in his own strength. It is possible that writing a poem is a premonition of imminent death. This is a kind of repentance in verse. And its meaning lies in the fact that the poet struggles with his own weaknesses, which force him to hide his true thoughts and feelings behind a mask of decency. This is also evidenced by the artistic analysis. Lermontov's "Prayer" is a turning point that divides his work into two distinct periods.
Analysis of the poem "Prayer"
Idea: The grace-filled power of prayer helps to survive the difficult moments of our lives.
Rhyme: cross (dactylic and masculine rhymes alternate)
In this poem, images of feelings are very clearly manifested: the image of sadness, confusion at the beginning of the work and the image of lightness, relief at the end. In order to more clearly feel the first image, such tropes as the epithet (In a difficult moment), metaphor (Sadness crowds in the heart) are used. Inversion is also used to highlight the intonationally semantic word (In a difficult moment; a wonderful prayer; grace-filled power, etc.). Also, to create an image of turmoil, the author uses assonance (the sound [y] is repeated).
All this gives a feeling of heaviness in the soul. The feeling of relief is opposed to sadness. this technique is called antithesis. In this poem, he is not only guessed, but even clearly represented by textual antonyms (Difficult - easy; sadness is crowded - the burden will roll off). To create an image of lightness, a metaphor is also used (The burden will roll off) and repetition (easy-easy). The sound background has also changed: the vowel [y] disappeared, and [a], [e] appeared. These sounds are more open, unlike [y].
Another important image is the image of the prayer itself. In its creation, inversion epithets are used (Wonderful Prayer; grace-filled power; living words) and metaphor (Pretty breathes). Prayer is shown to us as a miraculous power, and it is it that facilitates a person’s life, it manages those holy changes in the state of a person’s soul. We also note that in the poem only one verb reminds us of the existence of a lyrical hero: I repeat. All other verbs speak of prayer and the state of the soul.
Thus, the first stanza is a description of the state of mind of the lyrical hero, the second is a description of the power and beauty of the living words of this prayer, the third is a story about what grace-giving power brings to a person.
I like this poem because of its extraordinary sensuality. It makes me feel like a hero. and most importantly, I believe what Lermontov wrote.
"Prayer (In a difficult moment.)", analysis of Lermontov's poem
If you read the "Prayer" without the announcement of the author, it is difficult even to immediately believe that this is Lermontov. The poem does not complex structures, metaphors, even simply long words. Clear, light writing iambic trimeter. leaves the impression of a sincere friendly story.
The work is easy to learn by heart: in addition to a clear rhythm and coordinated cross rhymes. "Prayer" has a very harmonious composition.
If you disassemble the poem by stanzas, then at the beginning of the first, an oppressive mood is clearly felt. "In a difficult moment". "sadness creeps in". "I repeat by heart"- the abundance of combinations of consonants, especially with the letter "r", creates the impression of difficulty, heaviness. It is aggravated by the repetition of the sound “y”, causing associations with despondency.
The second stanza is transitional, it describes the revelation of the word, the power of prayer. Strength "gracious". incomprehensible to the lyrical hero, but clearly felt by him. "Consonance of the words of the living". "holy beauty"- these metaphors expressively convey the life-giving feeling experienced by anyone who sincerely reads a prayer. The keyword of this stanza is "gracious". giving good - and it completely changes the mood of the work.
With the overshadowed grace of the soul "burden rolls off". doubts go away - and lightness comes instead. It is felt even in the sound of the stanza: percussion sounds"a", "o", "e" reveal each syllable. Word repetition "easily". with which the poem ends, leaves the impression of flight and incompleteness, as if the soul of the lyrical hero simply dissolved in the fertile impulse of prayer.
There is only one first-person verb in the entire poem: "I say". This is the only action that the lyrical hero performs, and everything else is a consequence of this action, occurring by itself. It's through the repetition of the prayer "doubt rolls". and it will become easy, and faith will appear, and tears will flow.
The whole work is a description of a single impulse of the soul and its changing state. Such words could be uttered either by a deeply religious person, or someone who denied faith and experienced revelation. The poem was written in 1839, shortly before the death of Lermontov. It is difficult to say whether he had doubts and whether he was looking for support in faith, but it is known for sure that philosophical reasoning was characteristic of him especially in last years life. The poem "Prayer" could not even be inspired by the poet's own experiences, but he clothed them in such sincere, inspiring words that make the reader feel ownership of this impulse of the soul.
Text "Prayer (I, Mother of God, now with a prayer ...)" M. Lermontov
I, the mother of God, now with a prayer
Before your image, bright radiance,
Not about salvation, not before the battle,
Not with gratitude or repentance,
I do not pray for my desert soul,
For the soul of a wanderer in the rootless world;
But I want to give an innocent virgin
Warm intercessor of the cold world.
Surround with happiness a worthy soul;
Give her companions full of attention
Youth is bright, old age is deceased,
Peace of hope for a gentle heart.
Is the time of farewell approaching
In a noisy morning, in a silent night -
You perceive went to the sad bed
The best angel of a beautiful soul.
Analysis of Lermontov's poem "Prayer" Grade 9
The poem "Prayer", written in 1839, refers to the late period of Mikhail Lermontov's work. The author is only 25 years old, but he has already managed to go into exile and rethink his own life, in which he alternately played the role of a secular lion and a brawler.
Returning from the Caucasus in the rank of cornet of the Life Guards, the poet realized that he was not able to change anything in the world that surrounds him. And the feeling of his own impotence made him turn to God, whom, despite the classical religious upbringing, Mikhail Lermontov never took seriously.
Contemporaries of the poet and, in particular, Vissarion Belinsky, note that the stormy and active nature of Mikhail Lermontov very often makes him first do things, and then comprehend them. A rebel in life, he didn't even try to hide his Political Views. However, several months spent in the Caucasus made an indelible impression on the poet. He was not only amazed by Eastern wisdom, but also imbued with the ideas of a certain higher principle, to which the fate of every person is subject. Still remaining a rebel, Mikhail Lermontov, apparently, decided for himself that trying to prove to others their stupidity and worthlessness is not at all the mission that was destined for him from above. Upon his return to Moscow, he again shines at social events and even experiences some pleasure from the attention to his person from the representatives of the weaker sex, who are seduced by his fame as a hero, rebel and daredevil. However, from all the young ladies, Mikhail Lermontov singles out the young Maria Shcherbakova, who once tells him that only a prayer addressed to God gives peace of mind and helps in the most difficult moments of life.
Of course, it would be very naive to believe that a person with the makings of an atheist will go to the temple or make the Psalter his own. table book. Nevertheless, Mikhail Lermontov found in the words of a young person some truth that was inaccessible to his understanding. And - he wrote his own "Prayer", which became one of the brightest and most lyrical works of the poet.
In this poem there are no words addressed to God, no requests, self-flagellation and repentance. However, the poet admits that ordinary words can have healing power, clearing the soul of sorrow, anguish and a heavy burden caused by the realization of one's own powerlessness. But, most importantly, Mikhail Lermontov really follows the advice of Maria Shcherbakova and begins to pray when he feels himself trapped in his own thoughts and experiences. No less terrible enemy of the poet are doubts, which, however, are characteristic of all young people. However, for Mikhail Lermontov they are something of a punishment, as they call into question not only the poet's lifestyle, but also his goals, desires and aspirations. What if the passion for literature is an empty self-deception, and the bright ideals that identify the equality and mutual respect of people are just a fiction generated by a rich imagination? But there are Pushkin and Vyazemsky, Belinsky and Kraevsky, who adhered to such worldviews. And then, in order to dispel doubts and find spiritual support, Lermontov begins to pray, fervently, with tears and with a sense of repentance, for allowing even the thought that his fate may be different.
The poem "Prayer" is, to some extent, an attempt to come to terms with the path that is destined for the poet. But, at the same time, this is a strengthening of his faith in his own strength and, which is not excluded, a premonition of an imminent death. This is repentance in verse, the meaning of which is to fight against his own weaknesses, which force Lermontov to constantly hide his true feelings and thoughts under the guise of decency.

In a difficult moment of life
Does sadness linger in the heart,
One wonderful prayer
I repeat by heart.
There is a grace
In harmony with the words of the living,
And breathes incomprehensible,
Holy beauty in them.
From the soul as a burden rolls down,
And believe and cry
And it's so easy, so easy...
Analysis of Lermontov's poem "Prayer"
Two facts from the author's biography are connected with the appearance of "Prayer". In 1839, the poet received a Gospel and a collection of medieval spiritual texts translated from Greek as a gift from Prince Odoevsky.
Analysis of the poem Lermontov Prayer (In a difficult moment of life ...) Grade 7
The poem "Prayer" ("In a difficult moment of life") appeared in 1839, in the mature period creative life Lermontov. The poet already had the bad reputation of an atheist and a freethinker. What is at least a brilliant work of "Demon". But in the "Prayer" the author departs from his convictions. He seems to renounce independence and proud loneliness.
Russian people, even having received an excellent European education, kept deep in their souls the hope of divine protection. In a “difficult moment of life”, turning to God with prayer was a natural and necessary action. Lermontov was at the pinnacle of his work, he had already experienced serious losses and setbacks. The "demonism" of the poet has exhausted itself to some extent. "Prayer" is another attempt by the author to find harmony in the world and find peace.
Simple, learned by heart, the words of "wonderful prayer" have great power. Lermontov does not indicate them in the work, does not repent of his sins. According to him, the content of the prayer has no of great importance. What is important is the "consonance of the words of the living", their mysterious combination, capable of completely purifying and calming the soul of a person.
Reading the prayer relieves the author's anxious state, resolves all his doubts. Lermontov's painful feeling of loneliness disappears without a trace. Through prayer there is contact with the highest truth and justice. Sacred grace descends on the author, which allows him to live on with renewed vigor.
The text of the work was subsequently set to music. The poem "Prayer" has become a brilliant example of Christian lyrics. This once again emphasizes the genius and versatility of the poet, who is able to express himself in absolutely opposite genres.
Analysis of the poem by Mikhail Lermontov "In a difficult minute of life ..."
Mikhail Lermontov is a man who has always had a subtle feeling, and moreover, despite his difficult nature, he could understand a person if he was kind and always ready to help. Lermontov never betrayed himself in his life, he was always true to himself and, what is more important for him, to his principles. In his life it was difficult for him more than once, because no one can boast that it was easy, and especially this poet and writer.
A work called "Prayer", Lermontov wrote in 1839. It was in this year that an incident happened that prompted him to write such a poem. This was when a prince named Odoevsky presented Lermontov with a collection of medieval texts that consisted of spiritual subjects. And also, he received the Gospel book from the prince.
These very unusual gifts did not cause such bitter overwhelm of the poet, since they were presented by a friend. This was given to him by the prince so that Lermontov would turn to God more, pray more. After all, it is in faith and in prayer that we, people, can find peace and tranquility. It was not just that, because Lermontov was not famous for his piety, but rather for his atheism, since he may not have denied the appearance and existence of God, but he did not pray to him so often, if at all. adult life like other people at the time. He also did not attend church, which generally caused strange impressions in people, especially from high society, which he also belonged to.
Perhaps it would be some kind of protest against people, aristocrats, whom he hated with all his heart. And therefore, shortly after receiving the gift, Lermontov wrote the work "Prayer". This work is very short, but it is beautiful and calm. Lermontov writes in it that prayer is a very powerful action that brings calm to an excited heart. Prayer is very important in our Everyday life and not only when it is very difficult for us.
It is important to pray even when it is good, but in a different way - this is no longer so honest before God, to whom we directly turn. Lermontov describes all his feelings and sensations from prayer. Also, the poet, approximately in the center of the work, describes the words of the prayer, or rather their meaning, which is always important. After all, what we say is already somehow sacred in its own way. Lermontov, who must have forgotten how to pray a little, is now, as it were, delighted. Therefore, there are words in the poem - tender, and even affectionate.

The poem "Prayer" ("In a difficult moment of life ..."). Perception, interpretation, evaluation
The poet uses various means of artistic expression: epithets (“wonderful prayer”, “gracious power”), metaphor and comparison (“And an incomprehensible holy charm breathes in them”, “Doubt will roll down from the soul like a burden”), inversion (“In a minute difficult life"), an anaphora ("And I believe and weep, And it's so easy, easy").
It is difficult to say whether it was easy for a person who publicly declares his skepticism and unbelief, the creator of the beautiful "Demon" to turn to God from a pure heart.
The description of the verse "Prayer" may look like this: it depicts the collision of a lyrical hero with a harsh and difficult world. He is going through a difficult period of life and is in turmoil. The poem belongs to philosophical lyrics, and already from the first lines it sets a range of problems:
In Lermontov's poem "Prayer", the analysis of artistic means is no less important for understanding his idea than the consideration of the text itself.
For this, various stylistic figures are used, such as repetitions: “so easy, easy”, syntactic parallelism: “I believe and cry, / And it’s so easy ...”.
The poem is written in iambic four-foot and three-foot iambic, the rhyme is cross, precise, alternately masculine and feminine.
The meaning of the poem in the work of Lermontov
So, the analysis of the poem "Prayer" shows its artistic originality and emphasizes the universality of the lyrical hero for all readers: it is not for nothing that the romance to the words of Lermontov was equally successful both in high-society salons and among the common people. The importance of this work for Lermontov's work as a whole is undeniable. For many years it remains the pinnacle of Russian Orthodox lyrics, and only in the 20th century. A. Blok and S. Yesenin manage to reach the same heights in depicting religious feelings.
