Rating by academic discipline.
At HSE, it is customary to distinguish current and cumulative ratings. We allocate a rating before retakes and rating after retakes.
- Current rating allows you to compare educational outcomes students received by them within half a year (two training modules or one semester). This is an operational indicator of your progress. It is new every time and it includes the results in the disciplines of the last half of the year (there are usually 5-8 of them).
- Cumulative rating compares the academic achievements of students throughout their time at HSE. This is a cumulative indicator. Twice a year, new disciplines are added to the cumulative rating to the list of those that the student has studied since the very first year. Before graduation, students in the cumulative ranking will have results for all elements curriculum: disciplines, term papers, projects, etc. (bachelors have at least 30 of them, masters have at least 12).
- Rating before retakes(both current and cumulative) takes into account student grades as they were given during the sessions of the specified period. For students who did not appear for the exam, or who received unsatisfactory grades, zeros are taken into account for the corresponding elements of the curriculum.
- Rating after retakes calculated with the grades obtained in retakes.
Why is it defined?
The rating allows you to get differentiated and versatile information about the quality and effectiveness of education, as well as about personal educational achievements of students, including for making managerial decisions.
How is the rating calculated?
The rating is determined as follows:- Each faculty decides which students will be compared with each other. It is possible to compare students of the same course with one educational program, or several educational programs
- For each student, the sum of the products of grades by the credit weight of the element of the curriculum is determined. For example, a student studied for six months English language(4 credits), mathematical analysis(5 credits) and history (3 credits). I got the following marks for them: 8, 7, 10. For this student, the indicator is calculated: 4*8+5*7+3*10 = 97.
- Since every HSE student has an individual curriculum, the older the course, the more varied the set of curriculum elements for each student. And the amount of loans that the student scored may differ. Therefore, for a more accurate comparison, rating amounts are normalized by the maximum amount of loans among all compared students. The exact formula can be viewed in
- The entire list of normalized indicators is sorted in descending order - the higher the student's indicator, the lower his ordinal number in the list, which means that the student's personal rating is better.
If a student has chosen more disciplines during the six months than required by the curriculum of the educational program (for example, he took not three, as suggested, but four or five variable disciplines), then not all elements of the curriculum are included in the current rating. The student can control the inclusion of redundant elements from the variable part of the plan. You need to tell your study program office which elements should be considered in the current ranking (by written application or by e-mail). Coursework results, compulsory disciplines and the recommended number of variable disciplines are included in the current rating.
All results are accumulated in the cumulative rating - both for the variable part and for electives, regardless of the student's desire. Since the cumulative rating captures all learning activity, some students in the cumulative rating may be "higher" than their classmates, who are in the lead in the current rating.
The rating table is determined on the basis of data on student grades entered into the information system of the National Research University Higher School of Economics. The data is entered manually by the staff of the study office on the basis of statements signed by the teachers who took the exams. The table is calculated automatically according to uniform principles for all faculties and branches of the National Research University Higher School of Economics.
Since there is a "manual" section in this process, technical errors are likely. Therefore, the ranking tables in certain deadlines presented to students and if the student found inaccuracies (wrong grades, wrong disciplines), he has the opportunity to report the error to the study office within two working days.
When are ratings prepared?
Ranking tables are prepared after the summer and winter sessions, as well as after periods of retakesPoint-rating system is a system for evaluating results educational achievements students, allowing to integrate all forms of classroom and independent work students, the results of ongoing control procedures and intermediate certification, the process of learning and control.
Rating is specific numerical value, which shows the level of compliance of the student's educational achievements with the formalized scale of learning (from 50 to 100 points). The rating score is cumulative, that is, it takes into account the student's performance of all learning requirements and planned forms of control during the semester.
Why is she needed?
AT educational standards new generation provides for a new ratio of the volume of classroom and extracurricular activities (30% to 70%, respectively). Now students are required to be able to distribute their working time and greater autonomy. And it is the point-rating system that serves as a kind of navigator for them, because it provides for specific types of activities, specific criteria for its evaluation, a specific expression of the assessment in points. This system allows you to plan the final result of learning for each subject and control (primarily for the student himself, and not just the teacher) the success of achieving intermediate results.
How to design a point-rating system?
The direct basis for designing a point-rating system is the Work Program of the academic discipline, including its competency-based attitudes and related forms. educational technologies and control, the main content lines. However, before developing a rating plan (technological map of a score-rating system), it is advisable to draw up a calendar-thematic plan of the discipline, which allows you to visually show the relationship between lecture and seminars, to distribute the amount of independent work of students, to ensure the systematic distribution of all forms academic work and control by weeks during the semester.
On the basis of calendar-thematic planning, the basic part of the rating plan is compiled. It determines the rating assessment of class attendance, current control of students' work at seminars and practical classes (separately for each section of the program), as well as midterm control, which is recommended to be carried out 2-3 times during the semester. If the examination procedure is mandatory, then it is also included in the basic part of the rating plan. All these forms of control are evaluated in the total range from 50 to 100 (from the minimum "satisfactory" to the maximum "excellent" level of success).
The calculation of the final grade for the discipline is recommended to be done according to the following scheme: "satisfactory" - from 50 to 64 points, "good" - from 65 to 84 points, "excellent" - from 85 to 100 points; "test" - 65 points out of 100; "passed" - from 65 to 100 points).
It is advisable to indicate “special” requirements in separate columns at the end of the base part of the rating plan, for example, the procedure for accruing points for attendance, the possible number and grounds for rating bonuses and penalties (which is especially important for combating plagiarism when completing task ratings), forms of control, mandatory for all students, regardless of the number of points scored.
The additional part of the rating plan contains a list of compensatory tasks that students perform if they have not accumulated the required number of points. According to the terms of the point-rating system, there are no other forms of delivery of academic debts, except for compensating rating assignments.
All components of the rating plan must fully comply with work program academic discipline and be drawn up as part of the Fund of Evaluation Funds. This complex is approved by the decision of the department for each new school year.
The main models for designing rating plans
Depending on the specifics of planning the main components of the rating plan and the distribution of rating points, three main approaches to design can be distinguished:
"Classic Model"
Activities | Comment | ||
---|---|---|---|
Lecture attendance | 8 | 16 | Lectures have a backbone value for the training course |
Seminar attendance | 5 | 10 | The "classic" model of seminars on the principle of "questions - answers" |
Current control (seminars) | 15 | 30 | |
Line control (1) | 5 | 10 | For example, abstract review |
Line control (2) | 7 | 14 | For example, an interview |
Line control (3) | 10 | 20 | Comprehensive review of lecture material - for example, tests or a colloquium |
– | – | A “full” exam in a classic format, as part of additional tasks, is estimated at a significant amount, for example, from 30-35 to 60-70 points | |
Total | 50 | 100 |
"training model"
Activities | Minimum Points | Maximum Points | Comment |
---|---|---|---|
Lecture attendance | 3 | 6 | Lectures are introductory |
Seminar attendance | – | – | Estimated practical work in class, not attendance |
Current control (seminars) | 25 | 50 | Intensive training preparation |
Line control (1) | 5 | 10 | For example, a test |
Line control (2) | 5 | 10 | For example, a creative task |
Line control (3) | 6 | 12 | For example, a study project |
Intermediate certification: exam | 6 | 12 | "Mini-exam" as part of a modular control system: all tested knowledge and skills are balanced are divided into three or four blocks for midterm and final control |
Total | 50 | 100 |

QUALITY OF STUDENT TRAINING
Nizhny Novgorod
Dear student! Since the 20011/2012 academic year, NSPU has introduced a rating assessment of the quality of student training. Below are the answers to the 12 most important issues about the rating.
Rating is the sum of points that a student receives based on the assessment of all types of activities in the disciplines of the curriculum, as well as for participation in social work. The rating system allows you to rank students according to the results achieved and determine the success of their studies at the university.
The rating is used to stimulate independent systematic work of students, to reveal their creativity. The rating system is designed to increase the motivation of students' educational activities, for the objectivity and reliability of assessing the level of their preparation, and is used as one of the elements of managing the educational process at the university. Getting points allows students to clearly understand the mechanism for forming an assessment in a discipline, which will eliminate conflict situations upon receipt of the final grade; be aware of the need for systematic and regular work on the assimilation educational material; stimulate self-development and self-education.
The rating for the discipline is formed on the basis of the assessment in points of the quality of the student's performance of all types of independent classroom and extracurricular work provided for by the rating plan for the discipline. During the semester, current and boundary control is carried out. During the current control during the semester, various types of student activities can be assessed, for example, work with literature (note-taking, reviewing, annotating, etc.), doing homework, testing or doing tests on a particular topic, making a report, a message , oral answer on the topic, etc. The boundary control is carried out after studying any section (2-4 times per semester). It may include an assessment of such types of work as: preparing an essay, developing and defending a portfolio, testing or performing a test in a section, performing a creative semester homework and etc.
4. What are reward points for?
The teacher can add incentive points for speaking at a scientific seminar or conference; for participation in competitions, olympiads; for active work in the classroom and participation in disputes, in business games, in round tables; for publication of articles and other student achievements. The personal qualities of the student can also be assessed ( creativity when performing tasks; responsibility and activity in the classroom; diligence, discipline and hard work, the degree of independence and initiative, etc.). The total amount of added (rewarding) points cannot exceed 15.
5. What are demerit points for?
The rating system of assessment allows fixing individual violations of students' performance discipline and introducing penalty points (they are subtracted from the total points). Penalty points can be introduced, for example, for omissions training sessions by not good reason, for untimely fulfillment of mandatory activities, for submitting a report later than the deadline.
Evaluation of the student's work during the semester is carried out by the leading teacher in accordance with the system of control and rating plan of the discipline developed at the department. The rating plan defines all types of current and intermediate control, as well as the minimum and maximum amount points that a student can receive for each type of activity performed in the classroom and out of class time. The rating for each discipline is calculated within 100 points. The student must complete all the mandatory activities provided for by the rating plan, and receive for each topic (section, test) points in the interval from the minimum to the maximum declared by the teacher. A student must score a minimum of points for the performance of each mandatory type of activity provided for by the rating plan. Maximum points received on one topic are not redistributed to other activities.
Rating points are collected by students during the entire period of study of the discipline and are recorded by entering students' rating points into the register.
The teacher should inform students: a) at the beginning of the semester: on evaluation criteria for the performance of all types of activities in the academic discipline; about deadlines various kinds learning activities; b) during the semester: on the results of each control activity; on the results achieved in the subject (at least once a month); in) at the end of the semester: about individual rating.
8. How is the final grade for the discipline determined?
The curriculum may provide for the following forms final certification by discipline in the semester: FPA without assessment (test), FPA with assessment, exam. The final grade is given as follows:
Method of assessment |
|
FPA without evaluation (test) | |
FPA with an estimate | The grade is set on the basis of the rating for the semester in accordance with the following scale for converting rating points into a 5-point assessment system: 55–70 points - “satisfactory”; 71-85 points - "good"; 86-100 points - "excellent". (If the total score is less than 55, "unsatisfactory" is set). |
The grade is based on the ranking for the semester and the points obtained in the exam. The sum of points for the semester for admission to the exam must be from 45 to 70. (If the sum of points is less than 45, the student is not allowed to take the exam). A positive mark on the exam is determined in the range from 10 to 30 points. The scores for the semester and for the exam are summed up, and the final grade is put in the grade book and in the statement in accordance with the following scale for converting rating points into a 5-point grading system: 55–70 points - “satisfactory”; 71-85 points - "good"; 86-100 points - "excellent". |
9. What to do if a student:
a) did not participate in any control activities on time for a good reason, documented?
In this case, the teacher must provide him with the opportunity to perform these activities. The timing of the liquidation of the arisen debt is set by the teacher and controlled by the dean's office, based on the total number of days missed for a good reason.
b) scored less than 55 points in the discipline with "FPA without grade" at the end of the semester?
In this case, he has the opportunity to receive credit in an additional survey. However, regardless of the assessment obtained in this case, the sum of rating points for academic discipline will only be 55.
c) scored less than 55 points in a discipline with an "FPA with an assessment" or less than 45 points in a discipline with an exam at the end of the semester?
The student can, with the permission of the dean's office, at the time specified by the teacher, eliminate the backlog. However, regardless of the assessment obtained in this case, the sum of rating points for the academic discipline will be only 55 or 45, respectively.
At the end of each semester, the dean's office determines the student's individual rating as the average value of the total amount of rating marks in the disciplines in the semester, taking into account the complexity of each discipline. When determining the semester rating, the rating score for the practice and for the performance of the semester term paper, if they are provided for in the semester, is taken into account. By decision of the scholarship commission, social rating points can be added (within 15 points).
Approximate indicators of the social rating: 1) active participation in the work of public student organizations and associations; 2) participation in sports competitions and mass sports events; 3) participation in artistic creativity and cultural events; 4) other types of socially useful activities (labor landings, volunteer actions, etc.).
12. What are the advantages and possibilities of the rating system?
For scholarships;
To determine, based on the results of the semester (academic year), the best student of the course, faculty, university; the best student group; the best faculty (direction);
To receive various forms of encouragement: granting a pre-emptive right for admission to the magistracy and postgraduate studies; awarding grants for study or internships in foreign universities; nominations for a special (nominal) scholarship; recommendations when applying for a job, etc. To do this, based on the results of each semester, each course, as well as the results of the final state certification of graduates, an individual student rating is determined.
