foreign language as subject occupies an important place in school education youth
Currently, a large role is given to computerization and informatization of society, which also requires knowledge foreign languages. A foreign language enriches our horizons with information on history, geography, literature, art, music, introduces us to the life of the countries of the language being studied.
The relevance of the choice of topic is due to the fact that English is popular all over the world, as global language the world community. Already today, English occupies a very special position and is turning into a lingua franca - the language of interethnic communication of all mankind. But half a century ago, English was just one of the international languages, on a par with others accepted among the languages of communication in the United Nations.

CHAPTER I
THE ROLE OF ENGLISH IN THE WORLD
The importance of the English language for world communication, for trade, industrial, diplomatic relations on land and at sea is enormous.
Many people even believe that the main reason for learning English is that: “English is the only hope for the world language.”
Of all the existing languages, English is more likely to become international. Total number languages in the world is huge: between 4000 and 4500. But only five languages are spoken very big number people, namely in Chinese, English, Spanish, Hindi and Russian (in that order). Of the above languages, only English can claim the status of a universal language.
From the table presented in Appendix 1, we see that Chinese is the most common language. It is spoken by 1 billion people. This is easily explained. China is the most populous country in the world. Therefore, every sixth person speaks Chinese.
Chinese is followed by English. Gone are the days when the United Kingdom was great empire. It was replaced by the Commonwealth of Nations. The Commonwealth of Nations was founded by the Act of Westminster (The Statute of Westminster), adopted by the British Parliament on December 31, 1931, the Commonwealth of Nations was the successor to the British Empire. All states in the Commonwealth have equal status and recognize the British monarch as the official head of this organization. The Commonwealth is a voluntary organization whose main function is to promote cooperation among the member states of the Commonwealth.
From the very beginning, the Commonwealth of Nations included Australia, Canada, Ireland, Newfoundland, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Ireland and South Africa left the organization in 1949 and 1961 respectively, South Africa later rejoined the Commonwealth in 1995. Pakistan left in 1972 and rejoined in 1989. That is why English is spoken over such a large area, and we call it the world language.
On the map presented in Appendix 2, you can see the blue-coloredcolor of English-speaking countries.
More than 600 million people speak English as their first or second language and therefore can communicate through English.
Most importantly, this number includes most of the world's leaders. English is the most useful language in terms of business, politics and science. In each field of knowledge, more is written in English than in other languages. Most TV programs use it. Many newspapers in English are important in many cities where English is not a native language. If we are going to adopt an international language, then it will most likely be English.
An enormous, incalculable number of people use English not as their mother tongue, but as a second language. English is used in almost all ports of the world, in the ports of China, Indochina, etc. The population of the East, mainly in English, is in contact with Europe, which does not know Oriental languages.
At present, the spread of the English language in the world is carried out mainly indirectly, through special information and propaganda organizations, supposedly designed to promote the comprehensive development of the new independent states. One such organization is, for example, the British Council, whose programs in more than a hundred countries employ thousands of English specialists, including teachers of English. In addition to the British Council, the BBC broadcasting corporation, which organizes radio and television English courses, publishes a large number of textbooks designed to teach this language to foreigners, is primarily engaged in the spread of English.
As for the United States, they began to actively and purposefully promote the English language in the world much later than England. Of considerable importance in this respect was the second World War, during which American troops were in many countries (in some of them they still remain). Since then, the activities of American outreach agencies to spread the English language abroad have steadily increased. Today, USIA, the Peace Corps, the Center for Applied Linguistics, the International Development Agency, various public and private foundations are most active in this direction.
In some cases, the spread of the English language is facilitated by the administrative measures of entire groups of countries united common goals and tasks. In the countries of the European Union, in connection with the removal of customs and border barriers between its members, it was proposed that Europeans, primarily relevant government officials, speak three languages: their native language, English and a third language. English is official language European Central Bank, although the bank itself is located in Frankfurt am Main and is not a member of Britain or any other English-speaking country. English is the mandatory command language of NATO, the working language of the ASEAN Asian Trade Group, and various other specialized international organizations.
It is clear that those who learn English develop close ties with English. speaking countries. They read books written in these countries and learn about their history and traditions. Young people learn English at school and university, middle-aged people travel and do business there.
So, we believe that the future of the world language is determined. Some people say we don't need an international language. Machine translation has made great progress in a short amount of time. There may be a day when computers take over the translation job. But from our point of view, a computer can help us in reading and writing, but speaking of communication, we must admit that a computer can never become an intelligent and interesting conversationalist.
CHAPTER II
THE ROLE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN THE LIFE OF MODERN
STUDENTS
To find out the role of English in the life of schoolchildren and students different countries world, we used the materials of various Internet forums devoted to the attitude of young people to the study of foreign languages in general and English in particular. In our study, we used materials from the following sites:
Among the main reasons for learning English, we have identified:

(Parviz Osmanov, Azerbaijan).
- To defend a diploma at a university:
«I left a university with a diploma in financial mating, control and analysis of economical activity».
(Dmitry Kanakov, Russia).
In conclusion of the second chapter, I would like to give a joke that we found on the sitewww.english.seteclub.ru why English is taught by pessimists, realists and optimists:
pessimists
1. Foresight: English is a lifeline that can come in handy in critical situations. life situations; this is a reserve that is clearly not superfluous for survival in today's rapidly changing world.
2. Caring for children: make sure that your children or grandchildren will not be left without work in 5-10-15 years, when without knowledge of at least one foreign language - English - job applications will not even be considered.
3. To increase self-esteem: some study karate, others study English. What do you think is more important in conflict situation- the ability to fight or the ability to explain yourself and evade a fight?
REALISTS
1. Realized vital necessity: more employment options and, as a rule, higher pay for work, all other things being equal.
2. To obtain a profession in demand: there are professions that require fluency in foreign languages, and primarily in English: translators (guide-translator, literary translator, simultaneous interpreter), etc.
3. Responsible parents who want to take care of the future of their children. It is known that the study of a foreign language, including English, provides a powerful development of the brain in children under 6 years of age.
4. Loving children who take care of their elderly parents: the latest research has proven that learning foreign languages, and English too, in adulthood is an excellent prevention of sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease and helps prolong active longevity.
OPTIMISTS
1. Travelers: in order to get to know other cultures better and to be able to travel even without an interpreter.
2. Brides and grooms: those who want to significantly expand the choice when searching for their "half".
3. Businessmen wishing to enter international markets. As you know, English is the language of business.
4. Those wishing to improve their social status: fluency in foreign languages raised social status at all times. For example, a man of science in the Middle Ages necessarily knew Latin; Russian nobles were fluent in French and English, and so on. And now we have English in high esteem.
5. Those who want to stand out from the competition and get an additional chance for success in life: victory or defeat in high-level beauty contests (Miss Universe, Miss World, etc.) often depends on English proficiency; top models are required to speak English; an athlete will attract more media attention to his person if he can give an interview in English, not to mention the language of the country where the competition is held;
6. Opportunity to study in foreign universities of the world to prestigious professions: spoken English, in addition to a good profession, gives many advantages to residents of different countries of the world.
CHAPTER III
THE ROLE OF ENGLISH IN STUDENTS' LIFE
MBOU secondary school №19
In our study, we tried to analyze the trends in the prestige of the English language within our educational institution. Since English is a school subject, we interviewed 102 students in our school to find out how interesting given subject for them and what role it plays in their lives.
To do this, students were offered a questionnaire "The role of English in my life." In grades 5-6, the questionnaire was offered in Russian, in grades 7-11 - in English (the texts of the questionnaires can be found in Appendix 4).
The results were summed up for three age groups: grades 5-7 (53 students), grades 8-9 (34 students), grades 10-11 (15 students).
In the age group of 5-7 gradesThe most popular answers were: learning a language for a future profession (64%), using the Internet (26%), communicating with foreign friends (19%), watching satellite programs (19%), reading books in the original (19% ).
Analyzing the data obtained, we came to the conclusion that in grades 5-7, the study of a foreign language is of a practical nature. Students will learn English by listening to the songs of their favorite singer or reading an article about their favorite movie. Since communication is the main thing at this age, students prefer to communicate not only with their friends, but also with peers from other countries, and the Internet can help them with this.
In the age group of 8-9 gradesthe most popular answers were: learning a language for a future profession (41%), for using the Internet (29%), for communicating with friends abroad (21%), for listening to popular music (18%), 21% have difficulty answering questions questionnaires.
The data obtained show that in grades 8-9, the study of a foreign language is partly practical. Like students in grades 5-7, students in this group will learn English to watch movies, listen to music, read in the original, actively use the Internet, find pen pals.
At the same time, most of the students associate knowledge of the English language with future profession, since Russia is integrating into the world community, so the process of mastering English for establishing contacts becomes the most relevant.
However, it is alarming that 21% of students find it difficult to determine the role of the English language in their lives. This may be due to both the lack of sustainable motivation to learn the language, and the fact that students have not fully decided on their future profession.
In the age group of 10-11 gradesThe most popular answers were: learning a language for a future profession (53%), for using the Internet (33%), for listening to popular music (27%).
It can be seen from the graph that in this age group, most of the students associate knowledge of the English language with their future profession, which is not obvious, because. Most of the students have made their choice of profession. In addition, at present, most universities have included a foreign language in the list entrance exams. Therefore, it is relevant for students to search for information in a foreign language, tasks, measuring materials from various sources, including the Internet. Summarizing what was said in the third chapter, we note that:
Firstly, knowing English, we can get more information from various media, it can be your computer - where all the technical information is written in English, computer programs, by the way, are also written in English even in Russia, you can also read books in the original context, the translation does not always objectively reflect the true feelings and emotions that the author put into the novel.
Secondly, you will always now have the opportunity to talk with interesting people on a wide variety of topics in English, and besides, you can always travel abroad as a tourist, which is much more convenient and cheaper.
Thirdly, if you dream of a career, then you need English as air, especially if you dream of being a businessman. international level. All international negotiations, trading on stock exchanges are all conducted in English, you will have to take part in international conferences, communicate with business people, read international business magazines and newspapers.
Fourthly, everyone has a hobby - everyone has their own, but everyone loves music and a song - this is not a secret. And knowing English, you will always know exactly what your favorite singer sings. What about films? In this case, you also do not need a translator at all. And the Internet? This is a bottomless ocean of information - but most of the most necessary, just in English.
Fifthly, thanks to the English language, you can also make good money by translating texts not only for your friends, but also open your own bureau for translating various literature from English into Russian and vice versa.
Sixthly, someone, having studied English perfectly, will be able to give lessons.
In general, it turns out that everyone can find a reason for learning English - the main thing is to decide what it is for.
CONCLUSION
The world does not stand still, it is constantly being improved, new discoveries appear, the latest technologies are developed. And that is why it is very important to have a world language in which the figures of different countries and nationalities could communicate.Today, this language is English. A good command of English is more important today than ever before.
In a world that is becoming more and more "international", it is vital to find mutual language with representatives of other countries. English is the language of international communication and its knowledge makes it possible to accept and cope with all the changes taking place in the world. |
|
In the modern world, knowledge of English is the norm for active and purposeful people. If you communicate fluently in English, it greatly expands your life prospects. |
|
Among the important conditions for a successful professional career, knowledge of foreign languages is not the last. Proficiency in English makes an employee competitive in the labor market.Leaders of prestigious organizations give more preference to employees who know English, which opens the way to career growth. |
|
Highly qualified workers who speak world languages have always been and will be valued. Today it is not enough to be a specialist in only one area, as society ruthlessly requires a person to further development and improvements, otherwise it will simply sink to the very bottom of human development. |
|
The transition from an industrial society to a post-industrial information society determines the importance of the comprehensive development of communication skills among future specialists. The modern world is based on the latest technologies that require knowledge of the English language. Formation communicative competence and is the main purpose of language learning. |
|
Computerization of all types of work requires great knowledge of the English language from users. Most types of computer programs designed for the further growth of the enterprise, and in general the entire economy of the country, are created in English, which directly affects the labor market: the demand for workers skilled in the field is increasing. computer technology and who speak English. This way of communicating with people from different countries and getting the most recent and complete information as the Internet also requires users to know English.
|
Today, foreign languages are becoming widespread and of high importance. A few years ago school program was not as difficult as the current one, earlier children studied one foreign language (most often - English or German), today - two or even three. In specialized educational institutions children are taught in a more saturated program. Why has attention to knowledge of other languages grown so much in recent decades? What is the reason for this demand? The English language has acquired international significance; it is popular in almost all civilized and developed countries of the world. Therefore, the focus is on it. However, high interest modern society manifests itself in other languages, more and more people of different age categories begin to attend classes to study Italian, Spanish, French, German and Polish.
Is a foreign language a fashion trend or an everyday necessity?
Each person is guided by his own specific principles in the formation of views on life. Someone does not want to change anything and strive for the best, while someone spends everything free time for self-education, making a decision to study/improve the existing knowledge in one of the foreign languages. The most popular types of motivation are:Work
Most of modern specialties requires deep knowledge of employees in international languages. New innovative technologies and methods most often have an English description, most of the modern methodological literature also written in a foreign language. Often, good high-paying jobs are provided in international companies. Must be able to put into practice existing vocabulary, correctly build sentences (grammatically and stylistically). A company employee who is fluent in several languages may qualify for a higher income level. In addition, top management representatives should high level speak foreign languages in order to be able to conduct a dialogue with partners, hold an international meeting at a decent level, organize a master class or discuss prospects, as well as possible problems and difficulties.Studies
Among young people, the exchange student program, known as Work and Travel, is of great interest. After many qualifying rounds and lengthy discussions of the teaching staff, several applicants are selected, who are given the opportunity to go to study abroad, and their places will be taken by foreign students.Emigration
Did you get a chance to radically change your life and go to work/study abroad? Do not want to feel like a black sheep in another country, in a new company, in an unfamiliar team? It is for such cases that good knowledge of a foreign language of the international type will be needed.Travels
Are you familiar with the phrases: “Excuse me, can you help me?”, “Where is the hotel/airport/railway or bus station?”, “How can I book a room in this hotel?” etc.? Do you boldly go on a trip, taking a pocket phrase book with you? However, in case of any situation where you need help or advice local resident, you are just lost and cannot find the words to formulate your question or request? It is unlikely that anyone will argue with the statement that for a happy future, a child should learn at least one. However, it is interesting that foreign languages are not only a means for career growth. They actually change people's personality and brains.
"Hello I'm your aunt!"
Needed for business, French for love, and German for war. Someone will say that this is just a good metaphor. But spent in last years studies show that people who speak multiple languages think differently. By the way, this can explain the difficulties in mastering a foreign language at the level of its native speaker. For example, our compatriot, who has taken up English, will need to wean himself from gender, numbers, cases, and the richness of his native language. Instead, you will have to learn to convey the depth of thoughts through ambiguous terms. The English language is grammatically abbreviated, and what is expressed in our language by a suitable variant of the word, the English are forced to convey phraseological units. In many ways, this is the basis of specific British humor, which depends on the play on words and different shades of meaning of one phrase. At the same time, speaking about ordinary things on Chinese It's important to keep a lot of details in mind. For example, the phrase “this is my aunt” will sound different depending on whether the father is an aunt or mother, father’s sister or brother’s wife, her age compared to other close people. From the foregoing, we can conclude that, comprehending the subtleties of a foreign language, people begin to notice details of the world around them that they did not see when speaking their native language, and this is only to make the sentence sound grammatically accurate.
Important in focus or what gives concentration
Learning languages "trains" the brain and improves the ability to focus. Interestingly, this "training" is carried out quite organically due to phonological competition. Philological competition appears at the moment when a person hears the beginning of any word, for example, "in ...". The brain grasps the initial sounds of the word and extracts from memory all the appropriate options for continuing: "interest", "innovation", "inca" and the like. The competition is that all options compete for the attention of the listener. But after the subsequent sounds begin to appear, the number of "rivals" decreases until there is no "winner".
Neurobiological studies have shown that all options occur in the brain synchronously, and it is forced to discard the wrong ones all the time. For polyglots, the number of lexical items that need to be suppressed is much larger. That is, in the same example with "in ..." appear "input", "Instagram", "institute". A research team from Northwestern University and Houston University has determined that when the brain "mutes" extra variants of words, the areas responsible for attention are activated intensively in it. But for polyglots and bilinguals, the energy of these zones is much lower. Scientists were able to conclude that over the years of using different languages, they have so improved the ability to "silence" the wrong variants of words that they have brought this process to automatism. The same fact is confirmed by scientists from the University of York, adding that young bilinguals are more likely to switch from one task to another.
By the way, here is another fact that many people guessed about, but which only recently received official confirmation: the more languages a person has already mastered, the easier it is for the next one. Scholars Researchers from the University of Helsinki, Aarhus University and high school economics have confirmed that polyglots are more efficient in developing neural connections that are important for memorizing new lexical units both in already familiar and in subsequent languages.
Youth elixir
Regular training of the brain by learning foreign languages makes the brain resistant to age-related changes and even injuries, just like fitness strengthens the body. Messages that foreign languages for the brain are equal to fitness for the body appear in scientific literature with enviable regularity. For example, scientists from the University of York, who have been studying people who speak one or more languages for a long period, have learned that senile dementia manifests itself 4.5 years later in the latter. Moreover, bilinguals and polyglots had significantly more gray matter in the most "intelligent" part of the human brain - the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for higher brain functions.
What's more (as if that weren't enough!), people who learn languages are more likely to fully recover from a stroke. As scientists from the University of Edinburgh determined, 40% of bilinguals and polyglots and only 20% of monolinguals can restore all indicators after the death of most of the cells.
In the 18th century, Goethe said: "How many languages you know, so many times you live." He probably did not know that after centuries his words would turn out to be prophetic and the science of neurobiology would confirm them. Therefore, it is impossible to exclude the possibility that in a few years psychologists will begin to prescribe to their clients not pills, but a “suitable” foreign language.

The role of foreign languages in the life of society. Culture and language.
Society cannot live without the use of language, that most important means of human communication. There is not a single type of activity of people in which language would not be used to express their thoughts, feelings and will, to achieve mutual understanding between them.
Language enters into the social experience of mankind, develops together with mankind, develops together with human society and is assimilated by each individual only through communication with other people. 5
And there is nothing surprising in the fact that over time people became interested in their constant companion - language and created the science of it. This science is now called linguistics, or linguistics (otlat. lingua - language). Knowledge of the basic information given by this science is useful to every person, it is simply necessary for those whose profession is related to the teaching or research of language; it is necessary for those people who have to use the language as a professional tool (teachers, propagandists, lecturers, journalists, writers, etc.). From this we can conclude that the language is the property of all, but no one thinks about what role foreign languages play.
At present, when contacts with other countries are becoming ever closer, knowledge of foreign languages plays an important role. A modern person must know well at least one foreign language, because mutual understanding between peoples is of great importance for peaceful cooperation. Without knowledge of foreign languages, this cooperation is almost impossible. Now various forms of international communication are developing: international meetings, exhibitions, sports events, joint business. The exchange of schoolchildren and students also applies here. These are good prerequisites for learning foreign languages.
It is not easy to master a foreign language perfectly, you need to work hard. No one wants, he will achieve. People learn languages for many different reasons. Some people need them at work, others for traveling abroad, others do it out of interest. But in any case, knowledge of languages enriches our lives. They make it possible to read foreign literature, communicate with representatives of other countries, get acquainted with their culture, economy, science and technology.
There are many professions where foreign languages cannot be dispensed with.
These are, of course, translators, teachers, foreign languages, diplomats, journalists, scientists, tour guides, but also flight attendants, taxi drivers, truck drivers, customs officers. A saleswoman in a department store or a waiter in a restaurant does not need to speak a foreign language to understand a foreigner. A cutter who knows a foreign language well can use foreign fashion magazines in her work. Also at enterprises where foreign equipment is used, in order to be able to read the operating instructions and maintain this equipment. Businessmen, sportsmen, artists, who often go on business trips abroad, also cannot be without a foreign language. Foreign languages expand our world, make us richer. Johann Wolfgang Goethe once said: "A man is only a man, as many foreign languages he knows."
In the new XXI In the century proclaimed by Unesco as the age of polyglots, the entire civilized world strives for openness and mutual understanding. In this regard, the role and importance of learning foreign languages is growing. It becomes important to educate a person who will be able and willing to participate in intercultural communication in a foreign language. The basis of being and thinking of the new XXI century is a dialogue of different cultures. A foreign language, as a subject, has very effective means in educating a person of culture. It is important to use the entire educational potential of a foreign language as an interdisciplinary discipline that contributes to the introduction of students to world culture and, thereby, to a better understanding of their own culture.
An important role in the formation of ideas about the culture of the country of the language being studied is played by the factors of the native socio-cultural environment. Any national culture is an integral part of world culture. 1
The issue of the relationship between the concepts of "language" and "culture" is debatable: some scientists believe that language refers to culture as a part of the whole, others - that language is only a form of expression of culture, others - that language is neither a form nor an element of culture. As an illustration of the different solutions to this problem, one can cite the statements of the two largest representatives of cultural studies, the founders of the American and Russian school of ethno-linguistics-E. Sepirai of N. I. Tolstoy: „Culture, - says Sapir, - can be defined as something that a given society does and thinks, language is how it thinks” 3
“The relationship between culture and language,” writes Tolstoy, “can be considered as a relationship between the whole and its part. Language can be perceived as a component of culture or an instrument of culture (which is not the same thing), especially when it comes to the literary language or the language of folklore. However, language is at the same time autonomous in relation to culture as a whole, and it can be considered separately from culture (which is done constantly) or in comparison with culture as an equivalent and equal phenomenon”
It is the language that contributes to the formation of the spiritual world of society and man, providing society with a differentiated system of knowledge, contributing to the spiritual integration of both society as a whole and its various groups. Language, therefore, "acts as a kind of concentrate of the culture of the nation, embodied in various groups of this cultural and linguistic community." The contact of different cultures is reflected in the language in the form of lexical borrowings. The processes of interaction and internationalization of cultures are expressed in the formation of an international culture. One can come to the conclusion that a person spiritual growth, to enrich your worldview and horizons, you need to study foreign languages, culture, traditions of other peoples.
