Geography of the Altai Territory, Textbook for grades 8-9, Part 1, Revyakin V.S., Muravyov A.Yu., Rassypnov V.A., 2004.
What is geographical location, remember the plan for characterizing the geographical location of a country, region. How does the location of the territory affect the features of nature and economy?
Look at physical map our motherland. In the middle part of the country you will see one of the largest plains in the world - the West Siberian, which in the southeast borders on the mountain ranges of Altai and the Kazakh hills. Here, where the boundless expanses of the plain are first replaced by hilly foothills, and then by a fan of mountain ranges, our region is spread. Its territory is located at altitudes from 100...150 (Kulunda Plain) to 2300...2400 m (North-Western Altai).
Located within 51 -54 degrees north latitude. and 78-86 degrees East. temperate zone of the Earth, close to the center of Asia, the region extends from west to east for 560 km and from north to south for 500 km. From the administrative center of the region, Barnaul, to the capital of Russia, Moscow - 3419 km. Four time zones from the west and six from the east separate the region from the borders of the state
Questions.
How are river valleys and lake basins formed? Find the minimum elevation on the map. Where is it?
The lower, western, part of the Kulunda Plain was once occupied by a large body of water. gradual reduction in size water surface recorded in the height position of the terrace levels. At altitudes 115-120. 130-140, 150-155 m, many terraces have a concentric shape. The formation of the lower terraces continues at the present time. The older upper terraces have already been destroyed by water erosion. The manes found on the plain are the result of this destruction. They are oriented mainly from north to south, their height is no more than 2 m.
HISTORIES OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF NATURE.
What geotectonic cycles (epochs of folding) do you know? What forces create mountains? Under what forces are they destroyed? When formed mountain systems our country?
The earth's crust within the region is formed by complex geological processes that took place in the zone of contact between the former West Siberian Sea and the Altas-Sayan mountainous country. In the history of the interaction of the sea and mountains, three large time periods are distinguished. The longest one is the Paleozoic, which lasted almost 0.5 Ga (Table 2). During this time, the sea repeatedly increased in size, then contracted, breaking into isolated shallow basins. Twice during the epochs of the Caledonian and Hercynian folding (Table 2 of the column "Geotectonic cycle") in the south of the territory mountains rose and gradually collapsed, and in their place remained a low-hill mountainous country and vast leveled peneplain spaces. To the north stretched the coastal plain.

Altai region
Officially. Altai Krai is located in the southeast Western Siberia, 3419 km from Moscow. Territory 168,000 square km.
Informally. Altai Krai is very large and diverse. The topography changes as you move through the territory. He is like a growing bear, at first quiet and calm, then huge and majestic. So steppes and plains grow into foothills and mountains.
Officially. The climate is temperate continental, formed as a result of frequent changes in air masses.
Unofficially. The four seasons have many options and come back every year to see them from different angles. You can come in a hot summer, or you can come in cool and rainy weather. Give variety! - this is the main rule of Altai weather.
Summer and Altai mountains
Officially: The Altai Mountains are the most complex system of the highest ranges in Siberia, which are separated by deep valleys of mountain rivers and vast basins located inside the mountains.
Informally: The nature of Altai is amazing. Tourists from all over the globe rush to these places to enjoy the beautiful views of high mountains, mountain rivers, mysterious caves and deserted expanses. Immerse yourself in the tranquility and beauty of these places.
The settlement of the Altai Territory began
in the eighteenth century
Young Russia needed metal for the production of weapons and coins. Ural breeder Akinfiy Demidov founded in 1729 the first metallurgical plant - Kolyvano-Voskresensky. The bowels of Altai were also rich in silver. In 1744 Demidov began the production of silver. The result of Akinfiy Demidov's activities in the Altai Territory was the establishment of a feudal mining industry based on the serf labor of bonded peasants and artisans.
Event tourism in the Altai Territory
The creation and development of bright, interesting events in the business, cultural, sports life of the Altai Territory has become the basis for the development of event tourism in the region. More than a dozen festivals, forums, holidays are held annually in the region, which can attract thousands of tourists from various regions of Russia and from abroad. These are the VISIT ALTAI International Tourism Forum, the Maral Blossoming holiday, the Altayfest drink festival, the Day of Russia on the Turquoise Katun, the Shukshin Days in Altai festival, the Asia-Pacific International Youth Forum, the SCO forum, the Siberian International Forum on Health and medical tourism, the holiday "Altai Wintering" and many others.
beauty and health
Officially. Useful flora of the region has 1184 plant species. The most large group drugs, including widely used in official medicine about 100 species.
Informally. Decoction, herbal teas, berry fruit drinks - this is what everyone who comes to the Altai Territory needs to try. Spas, health and wellness centers use products made from Altai herbs.
Geographical position
Altai Krai is located in the southeast of Western Siberia, on the border of continental Asia, 3419 km from Moscow. The territory of the region is 168 thousand square meters. km, occupies the 24th place in terms of area in Russian Federation and 10th in the Siberian Federal District. In the north, the region is bordered by Novosibirsk region, in the east with Kemerovo region, the southeastern border passes with the Republic of Altai, in the southwest and west - the state border with the Republic of Kazakhstan, the length of which is 843.6 km. Climatic features
The climate is temperate sharply continental, formed as a result of frequent changes in air masses coming from the Atlantic, the Arctic, Eastern Siberia and Central Asia. The absolute annual amplitude of air temperature reaches 90-95o C. The predominance of cloudy weather provides a significant influx of solar radiation. The duration of sunshine averages 2000-2300 hours per year, the amount of total radiation reaches 4500-4800 MJ/m2 per year. Average annual temperatures are positive, 0.5-2.1оС. Average maximum temperatures in July are 26-28oC, extreme ones reach 40-41oC. The average minimum January temperatures are -20 -24оС, the absolute winter minimum is -50 -55оС. The frost-free period lasts about 120 days. The most dry and hot is the western flat part of the region. To the east and southeast there is an increase in precipitation from 230 mm to 600-700 mm per year. The average annual temperature rises to the south-west of the region. Due to the presence of a mountain barrier in the south-east of the region, the prevailing west-east transport of air masses acquires a south-west direction. North winds are frequent during the summer months. In 20-45% of cases, the speed of the southwestern and western winds exceeds 6 m/s. In the steppe regions of the region, the occurrence of dry winds (up to 8-20 days a year) is associated with an increase in wind. In the winter months, during periods of active cyclonic activity, blizzards are observed everywhere in the region, the frequency of which is 30-50 days a year. The snow cover is established on average in the second ten days of November, is destroyed in the first ten days of April. The height of the snow cover is on average 40-60 cm, in western regions decreases to 20-30 cm, complete blowing of snow. The depth of soil freezing is 50-80 cm; in steppe areas bare of snow, freezing to a depth of 2-2.5 m is possible. Water resources
Main rivers: Ob, Biya, Katun, Aley, Charysh. The total surface runoff of the region's rivers is 53.5 km3 per year. In the Ob basin, which occupies 70% of the territory of the region, 53 km3 is formed. In the drainless region of the Ob-Irtysh interfluve (30% of the territory), only 0.5 km3 of runoff is formed. There are 17,085 rivers flowing on the territory of the region with a total length of 51,004 km, of which: 16,309 - less than 10 km long; 776 - more than 10 km long (including 32 rivers with a length of more than 100 km, 3 of them - more than 500 km). 9700 rivers have more or less permanent streams. The main water artery of the region is the Ob River, which is 493 km long within the region, and is formed from the confluence of the Biya and Katun rivers. Its largest tributaries (more than 500 km long) are the Aley, Charysh and Chumysh rivers. There are about 13,000 lakes on the territory of the region, of which over 230 have an area of more than 1 km2. The largest are located in the steppe zone of the region: Kulundinskoye - 728 km2, Kuchukskoye - 181 km2, Gorkoye (Romanovsky district) - 140 km2, Bolshoye Topolnoye - 76 km2, Bolshoye Yarovoye - 66.7 km2. There are significant reserves of groundwater. Their potential operational resources within the flat part of the region for a 50-year period are 269 m3/sec. The region uses less than 20% of fresh groundwater from the total predicted operating reserves. Diversity of the animal world
The diversity of zonal and intrazonal landscapes of the Altai Territory contributes to species diversity animal world. The most numerous group of animals in the region are invertebrates, and among them there is a class of insects (more than 400 species). 31 species of insects are listed in the Red Book of the Altai Territory. The class of amphibians is represented in the region by five species, of which two species - the common newt and the salamander - are listed in the Red Book of the Altai Territory. Of the nine species of reptiles, the steppe viper, the round-headed takyr, and the multi-colored foot-and-mouth disease, living in some steppe regions of the region, are listed in the Red Book. There are more than 320 species of birds in the region, of which 220 to 290 species nest in the region. Due to the reduction of the areas of the most important nesting sites, the serpent eagle, little bustard, bustard have completely or partially disappeared. Of the 84 bird species listed in the Red Book of the Altai Territory, more than half of the species are directly related to the wetlands of the region. Mammals are represented by 82 species. Highest value have wild ungulates and fur-bearing animals, from the prey of which meat, fur, leather and medicinal raw materials are obtained. In recent years, the number of elk, brown bear, squirrel, marmot, musk deer, and otter has decreased. There is a slight decrease in the number of wolves and beavers. However, since 1996, there has been a tendency to increase the number of some animals, especially those licensed for hunting - deer, roe deer, elk, brown bear, musk deer, sable, wild boar. The plowing of vast expanses of flat forest-steppes and steppes has led to the emergence of peculiar anthropogenic forest and field habitats with a specific population of the animal world. In the northern forest field among mammals, the field mouse has acquired a dominant position. In the fields on the site of the southern forest-steppes and real steppes, species of the steppe fauna - ground squirrels and hamsters - dominate. The red-cheeked ground squirrel has become dominant, expanding its range across plowed lands. plant resources
The following types of vegetation are represented on the territory of the region: forests, steppes, meadows, swamps, tundras, shrubs, rocks, water, saline and synanthropic. The flora of the Altai Territory includes 2186 species of higher vascular plants, including 1886 native and 300 adventitious, about 400 species of mosses, about 700 species of lichens. Among them there are representatives of endemic and relict species. Hayfields and pastures. Pasture and hayfields of the Altai Territory occupy 3731 thousand hectares, which is 35% of the agricultural land area. Hayfields and pastures are of economic value, being a fodder base for animal husbandry, as well as habitats for various animals and plants, including rare ones. Up to 300 species of plants producing roughage grow on them. These are mainly cereals, legumes and herbs. The floodplain hay meadows are the most productive for the production of green fodder mass. The herbaceous vegetation of forage lands successfully protects the soil from erosion and deflation (with reasonable loads of grazing livestock). The useful flora of the region includes 1184 species of plants, among which there are: medicinal - 913 species, melliferous - 379, fodder - 663, decorative - 400, food - 228, vitamin-bearing - 42, dyeing - 117, essential oil - 87, tanning - 58 , poisonous - 135, technical - 79 species. The group of medicinal plants is the largest, of which about 100 species are widely used in official medicine. These are golden root, maral root, red root, peony marin root, Ural licorice, oregano, St. John's wort, high elecampane and others. There is medicinal plants, whose culture is complex and natural resources are the only source of raw materials: spring adonis, lingonberries, calamus marsh, yellow capsule. Edge forests. The total area of the forest fund in the region is 4375.1 thousand hectares (26% of the entire territory of the region), including 3635.6 thousand hectares covered with forest. The forest cover of the Altai Territory is 22.1%. The distribution of forests on the territory of the region is uneven. In the Kulunda steppe and the forest-steppe zone of the left bank of the Ob, forest cover is 12%, in the right bank of the Ob 24%, rising to 34% in the mountainous part. The stock of timber is 527.4 million cubic meters. m. The predominant species in the forests of the region are conifers - 43.2% (including cedar 1.1%), small-leaved - 56.8%. The average age of plantations is 62.8 years, including coniferous - 84.6 years and deciduous - 47 years. According to the forestry and forest economic conditions, the role and importance of forests in the region, 4 forestry regions have been identified: Lentochno-borovoy, Priobsky, Salairsky and Predgorny. On the territory of the Altai Territory, conditions for forest fires occur from April to October inclusive. To eliminate the consequences of forest fires, the death of plantings from pests and diseases of the forest, and to increase the forested area, reforestation measures are being taken. The annual volume of reforestation in the region is over 10 thousand hectares. Mineral resources
Hard and brown coal, iron ores, manganese, chromium, titanium, vanadium, tungsten, bauxites, nickel, cobalt, polymetals, precious metals (gold, silver, platinum), scandium and rare earths, fluorspar, cement raw materials, gypsum. The Altai Territory is famous for its unique deposits of jasper, porphyry, marble, granite, mineral and drinking underground waters, mineral therapeutic mud. Significant reserves of mineral raw materials for the food and chemical industries are concentrated in salt lakes: sodium sulfate, table salt, natural soda, magnesium and bromine salts. The resource base of polymetals of the region is concentrated in 16 deposits with total balance reserves of 70 million tons of ore. The deposits are located compactly, in areas with a well-developed infrastructure in the southwestern part of the region. In addition to the basic metals - copper, lead, zinc - the ores of the deposits also contain gold, silver, cadmium, bismuth, selenium, thallium, gallium, tellurium, sulfur and other elements (barite in some deposits). The raw material base of iron (magnetite) ores is represented by two detailed explored deposits with total ore reserves of about 490 million tons. The deposits are located in the unallocated subsoil fund. The predictive potential of the raw material base of coal is quite high (200 million tons of hard coal and 600 million tons of brown coal). The intensification of coal mining in the coming years is associated with the Munai lignite deposit. With the involvement in the operation of the entire field with reserves of 34.7 million tons, annual production can be increased to 800 thousand tons or more. Gold is contained in complex polymetallic, gold ore proper and alluvial deposits. Gold of the complex polymetallic type is concentrated in the 16 above-mentioned deposits. Alluvial gold deposits are concentrated in 17 gold placers, 8 deposits are being developed. 4 deposits of sodium sulfate have been explored with total reserves of 265,309 thousand tons. Kuchuk with a production volume of about 500 thousand tons of sodium sulfate per year. The Altai Territory has mineral waters and therapeutic mud, on the basis of which the sanatorium-resort system was developed. The Belokurikha resort widely uses sources with subthermal low-mineralized low-radon nitrogen-siliceous waters; Small Yarovoye (400 m3/year), are preparing for the development of a deposit of therapeutic mud from Lake. Gorkoe-Zavyalovskoe and lake. Mormyshanskoe. 4 Introduction The tutorial contains a comprehensive geographical characteristic territory of the Altai Territory. It consists of two chapters that characterize the current natural-ecological and socio-economic state and the main trends in the development of the territory of the region. Chapter I was prepared by Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor Yu.V. Kozyreva, Chapter II by Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Senior Lecturer N.V. Rygalova. The creation of the manual is dictated by the need to summarize disparate information on individual thematic blocks to help students in studying the geography of the region. The manual is intended for students of the Faculty of Geography, studying in the areas of "Geography" and "Ecology and nature management", while studying the geography of the Altai Territory. At the end of each section there is a list of questions and tasks that are necessary to test the current and final knowledge of students. As a result of studying the discipline, students should know: the physical-geographical and economic-geographical position of the region, the boundaries of the territory; history of research and development; natural conditions territory of the Altai Territory: relief, geological structure, tectonic processes, the main regularities of the climatic and hydrological regime, vegetation and animal world, soil cover and landscape structure; availability and distribution of natural resources: minerals, hydrological and hydrogeological, agro-climatic, biological, soil, recreational resources; features of modern demographic processes, the system of resettlement of the population of the Altai Territory; the standard of living of the population of the region;
5 features of the organization and development of the tertiary sector of the economy; modern structure industry and agriculture, branches of specialization of the region's economy; be able to: find the necessary information when working with geographical maps and statistical databases of the region; analyze and characterize natural and economic processes and phenomena; determine patterns of changes in the natural environment; highlight the factors of location of industrial and agricultural production; own: methods of regional analysis of natural and socio-economic systems. The lack of a modern comprehensive textbook on the geography of the Altai Territory causes difficulties in educational process. Previously published textbooks and manuals currently require updating materials. This is especially true for the information of the socio-economic block, which requires constant updating. The textbook is based on the works of V. S. Revyakin, O. M. Adamenko, L. M. Burlakova, A. A. Eremin and N. I. Bykov, G. V. Zanin, B. N. Luzgin, V V. Mishchenko , V. M. Mochalova , N. V.
